It's impossible to change the nature of a dog. Pointers are bred and used as HUNTING dogs. Therefore, they will most likely attempt to find and hunt small animals. How can i teach my pointer to stop hunting?
Dogs are put into groups because that is what they specialize in. If your dog is a working hunting dog, it has a very strong prey drive. What you must do is focus that drive into a very similar but non lethal approach. These type of dogs can easily turn their fascination to toys, like balls, frisbees, basically anything they can chase. When they catch the toy reward them as if you were a proud hunter and you dog just caught a great catch. That will redirect his drive, and still make him feel like he serves the pack well. He wants to feel like he serves his instinctual purpose, so let him, but redirect him.
why get a breed that is known for that sort of thing and then try and change its innate nature?
When you start your walk make sure she knows whats up. Don't let her get excited before leaving home. Put the leash on her and wait until she calms down. Open the door and make her sit and wait. When she is calm in the doorway walk forward. If her nose starts to drop check(a slight tug) the leash If she turns her head check the leash. This way she will realize there is a time for hunting and there is a time for walking. The first couple of time make it a 5min walk and always end on a positive note with her paying attention. Gradually she will be able to go on longer walks. You might even have to invest in a skate board or run with her to get that energy re-directed. Just above all be calm and she will too.
you have a very hard and long road ahead of you if you think you are going to be able to stop you pointer hunting. its in its nature bred through the generations. however you can try to make this better. use food rewards while out on walks if she/he is a food orientated dog to distract try making it sit while on a walk and dont continue to walk until the dog has stopped pulling. what type of training collar do you have? i find that harnesses are much better you can control the dog better withour harming it. goodluck
you really can't change a pointer from hunting
