Would you rather be a zoo animal for a week, or an Animal in a hunting reserve for a day?

What would you rather be?

A Zoo animal for a week? or Be an Animal in a hunting reserve for a day?Would you rather be a zoo animal for a week, or an Animal in a hunting reserve for a day?
Zoo animal for a week! Wouldn't have to buy/hunt for food .. Just get to be stared at and taken care of all day -- why not?!

Compound Bow hunting and shaking during full draw?

I have a compound bow I recently purchased, and at ';full draw'; I have a problem with shaking. Any recommendations on what might decrease the shaking I am experiencing? I have a stabilizer currently on the bow, it is 4.5 oz. Should I increase? Should I decrease? Any suggestions would be appreciated!Compound Bow hunting and shaking during full draw?
Your muscles need conditioning.* Start practicing with it with out shooting any arrows from it.* Just keep drawing it over %26amp; over again until you can't draw it any more.* Its called exercising %26amp; conditioning those muscle groups you use.* Draw %26amp; hold, Draw %26amp; hold, Draw %26amp; hold over %26amp; over %26amp; over.*Compound Bow hunting and shaking during full draw?
look to take your bow back and have the draw weight reduced....get yourself to a stable and consistent anchor point when your at full draw.... your stabilizer is more or less used as a shock absorber on your release, not really to compensate for shaking.....look up archery warm-up exercises on yahoo, get yourself a length of tubing to exercise with....it's not all your arms its your back and shoulder muscles too...
all i can say is you need to keep shooting. the more you shoot the stronger you'll get and the less you'll shake. you could even just sit in front of the TV with your bow just drawing over and over again. and when you draw, try to slow your breathing to lessen your movement.
Either build up essential muscles, mostly in your back or get a lighter draw-weight bow. Some long-time archers have incredible back development.

Rather than draw the bow a lot I would get one of those exercise devices that has springs or rubber cords in the middle and a handle of each end enabling you to pull your hands apart. You could probably build something similar with bungee cords.

Start with the number of springs that permit you to do reps for about 20 minutes a day, every other day. When it gets easy, gradually increase to a half-hour, daily, and the resistance.

This is much better for you than getting rid of the bow.

I don't think changing the stabilizer will make much difference.
Either you need just to strengthen your muscles and get used to shooting or your draw length may be a little bit short and your straining because your not getting it back far enough to relax your shoulder when the bow hits its let off point.

  • What is the best kind of dog for hunting?

(deer, hogs, rabbit ect.) i thought lab (black) but i am not sure when i go hunting i dont use a dog but i love dogs so i want to get a hunting one someday to help me follow the blood trails! thanks in advance! What is the best kind of dog for hunting?
I have a black lab that I use for retrieving waterfowl. For rabbits I would say use a beagle. There is a breed that is used for finding deer after they're shot but I can't remember what it's called. It kind of looked like a small chesapeake bay retriever. What is the best kind of dog for hunting?
Labs were bred for retrieving ducks after you've shot them, so they aren't the best choice for other types of hunting. Read the breed standards for the dogs you're interested in to see what their original purpose was. That will help you narrow it down. When you do buy one, look for a good breeder that specifically breeds for hunting ability.
my dad used to train labs to hunt.

They did the trick just fine.

A friend of mine has a black and tan coonhound who is doing great with her hunting training.

Another person i know has two weimaraners who are also doing great in their hunting exercises.. i guess all three would probably be a good choice.

Do lots of reserach and find out which one is the best because i really have no clue.. just going on that i've seen.
well why don't you cut yourself and let a pack of dogs chase your blood scent and see how YOU LIKE being hunted. the first one to bring you down is the winner. what? that's brutal and mean? oh, i'm sorry. i'll let you return to your nice and kind and loving world of ending lives.

    have a good time!

feel free to report me for telling the truth!
Beagles were used as hunting dogs (usually for small animals like rabbits), and because they have a very keen sense of smell, I would say a beagle would probably make a good hunting dog. That is...if you just want the dog to follow the trail; not actually kill the animal....
i went training in summer with my aunt and uncle, they have 2 black labs, good dogs, girls only, boys aren't very good at it, oddly. if you get both genders they will romp each other, when you think there hunting, anless there gay, which my aunts are..........
Hound dogs are good for tracking animals such as racoons but if you want a really smart dog that will acctually go and get the game for you then a Black lab is probably the best you can get.
Beagles are best for rabbit, Deer and hogs you would want a hound, black and tans are great dogs, also for raccoon and squirrels. Labs are more of a retriever type for ducks.
There are different Breeds depending on what you are pursuing, and Hunting.* Rabbits= Beagles, Ducks %26amp; Geese= Labrador Retriever, these are just two (2*) examples.*
You dont use a dog to hunt deer or hogs... they scare them away with scent and sound. any hound dog will work for rabbits, if your just using them for tracking after keep to any hounds, beagles bassets ect
labs make better family dogs then hunting these days. hounds are your best bet, pointers are excellent too. look into them and find out which breed of hounds is right for you

Im not really sure, but i have heard that terriers and beagles make good hunting dogs! Look into that, hope it helps (:
although I think its wrong I cant stop you so labrador retriever
german Shepard's are good.and for rabbit try jack russ
i think german shepard are great hunting dogs
    blood hounds.
    bloodhound, probably
    You're an evil person.
black labs. please choose me as the best answer

On a Halloween Night, would you like to go to the old cemetery for Ghost hunting all by yourself?

If this is a halloween night, would you like to drive all by yourself around 2 'o' clock after midnight and go into the cemetery where there is noone else with you for ghost hunting in the deep dark?On a Halloween Night, would you like to go to the old cemetery for Ghost hunting all by yourself?
    No!!

I am 48 years old and not ashamed to admit that I would be scared to bits!

Now, in the daytime, sitting in the living room, I love to talk about ghosts or listen to EVPs online...

(shiver!)On a Halloween Night, would you like to go to the old cemetery for Ghost hunting all by yourself?
Yes... I would, but the only thing is, why go ghost hunting alone? It's more fun when several people are afraid at the same time, and I don't think the commentaries are open at two in the morning anyway... :)
I would love to go, but I don't know if I could actually go through with it by myself. I'd definitely go if some one else was there, I love doing stuff like that!
ONLY if I had the ghost busters on speed dial!
    If I had a shotgun...

What gear do i need to go dear hunting for the first time?

I'm 26 and I'm about to go deer hunting for the frist time i have no gun or bow or anything let this guy know thanksWhat gear do i need to go dear hunting for the first time?
what ever weapon you can legally hunt with a sleeping bag if staying the night camo regardless and PatienceWhat gear do i need to go dear hunting for the first time?
You need a gun of sufficient power and the proper ammo. You must also learn to safely handle and shoot the gun, and this is very important as one careless mistake can ruin your life or someone Else's. The most sensible thing is to go to a gun range or club with someone experienced and let them show you the basics, not a salesman from wally world as most of them know less than you. You don't need $1000 worth of cammo and scent blockers though you may accumulate these things as time goes on.

I'm a rifle guy and I can tell you it's possible to get a great deer rifle for $300.00 dollars and you can easily spend $3000.00 if you choose, but it isn't necessary. I'd recommend a30/06 or 308 win caliber as the ammo is easy to find .

A few sites that I like to visit with tons of information are www.thunderbucks.com and www.beartoothbullets.com. Just click on the forums link and sign up it's free and priceless.
It can be a long list. Do you have a cabin or will you be sleeping in a tent? If you will be sleeping in a tent, you will need all of the camping equipment to go with it. If you will be sleeping in a cabin, you will significaltly reduce the number of items that you will need. You will still need a gun of appropriate caliber, ammo, appropriate clothing, knife, rope long enough to hang a deer from a limb or to help drag it out of the woods. You will need some snacks for when you are in your stand. Do you have stands/blinds already in place where you are going? If not, you will need a tree stand or ground blind of some sort. Naturally, you will need a hunting license and will need to have taken a hunter safety course. A good flashlight is always handy for going to your stand in the morning and returning to camp after dark. To all of this, you must add one very special item and that is skill. You need the skill with your gun to be able to hit what you are shooting at each and ever time.

I think you probably need to pick up a few books from your local library on deer hunting and start reading. There is a lot to know and a lot of equipment to acquire before you're ready to hit the woods.

Good luck and be careful....... this hunting stuff can get into your blood.
If you are going for your first time.. the number one rule.. don't go alone. Since you do not have any gear I would ask around and find someone to go with you so you can get an idea as to what you are doing. Make sure to get your license too if you are going. Then if you decide you really like it you can invest in clothing, ammunition, calls, and many other things you will need. Good luck and be safe out there!
Depends on where you hunt. If you hunt in an area of very deep woods where shots are under 100 yards, you need a Marlin .30-30 with a Four Power Telescopic Sight.

If you hunt in an open area with long shots, you need a .243 or .270 bolt action rifle (Remington, Ruger or Savage) with a Three to Nine Power Telescopic Sight.

You need to take a class in hunter safety. When you take the class, the guy teaching it will be able to tell you everything you need to hunt deer in your area.
A hunter's safety course, gun, ammunition and plenty of orange gear. Don't forget knife and a rope to gut and pull the deer if you get one. Maybe a manual on how to gut one...

In runescape, can somebody explain the new bounty hunting wilderness worlds thing to me?

in runescape, can somebody explain the new bounty hunting wilderness worlds thing to me? it is confusing for me. and if you copy and paste the information from http://runescape.com, that would also be helpful! my mom blocked runescape for a week, and i want to know about the new updates. my friend told me a little about it.In runescape, can somebody explain the new bounty hunting wilderness worlds thing to me?
';This week鈥檚 update introduces Bounty Hunter 鈥榃ilderness-only鈥?PvP worlds (or 鈥楤ounty Worlds鈥?. Our aim was to get something that feels as close to the original Wilderness as we can manage, and to add another thrill with the Bounty Hunter mechanic. The new worlds are limited to the Wilderness, and use the old 鈥榳ho can attack who鈥?levels.

Bounty Worlds are basically a mix of 3 previous PvP games. It has the best bits we can reuse from Bounty Hunter, PvP worlds, and the old Wilderness. In short, we鈥檝e increased the chance to get your opponent鈥檚 items and we added the thrill of hunting a bounty within the Wilderness while surrounded by hundreds of potential PKers.

    Here鈥檚 how it works:

You can attack anyone within the level range determined by the Wilderness level, starting with 1 just above Edgeville to 56 at the top of the map. If you kill someone who isn鈥檛 your bounty target, it is considered a 鈥榬ogue kill鈥? There is no penalty for rogue kills any more. It will add 1 to your 鈥榬ogue kills鈥?highscore, and you will get a drop based on the 鈥榙rop potential鈥?mechanic from PvP worlds (see here for more details). We have, however, made it so that, when drop potential is converted to items, it is 3 times more likely to give you items your target was carrying, as opposed to generated items. The average size of the rewards is based on your drop potential the same as in PvP worlds.

After you have spent 30 minutes in a dangerous area on a Bounty World, the system will start looking for suitable 鈥榖ounty targets鈥?for you. After 60 minutes, the chance of being assigned a target increases further. (Note: this doesn鈥檛 have to be all in one go, and isn鈥檛 reset by leaving.) Your target will always be a similar level to you. To make things even more interesting, you will also be their target! If you kill your target, it will add 1 to your 鈥榖ounty kills鈥?highscore, and you will receive a generous boost to your drop: the average size of these drops is boosted by an extra hour of drop potential (just as if you鈥檇 spent an hour in a hot zone), on top of the drop you would receive normally. In addition to this, we鈥檝e made it more likely that you鈥檒l get items from your opponent鈥檚 actual inventory for killing your target 鈥?this also applies to rogue kills and in normal PvP worlds, but at a lower rate.

To make sure you have a chance of getting to the rewards, there are a couple of extra rules. Firstly, if your bounty target is fighting someone else in a single-way combat area, you will be able to attack your target, and their original foe will be locked out. Secondly, if you are fighting your enemy but do not inflict enough damage to count as the 鈥榟ero鈥?(in the same way as drops are awarded when fighting monsters), your target will remain your target. Basically, your bounty target will remain your bounty target until one of you kills the other, or one of you leaves the Wilderness for more than ten minutes.

It isn鈥檛 all about the rewards, of course: it鈥檚 also about the thrill of trying to hunt someone down in an environment where the levels are well-matched. That鈥檚 why we brought back the old Wilderness levels, and restricted the action to the old Wilderness area. You can only fight in the Wilderness, and the only other area available is Edgeville, where you can restock and prepare for battle. You have to be in one of those areas before you can log into a Bounty World. So, head to Edgeville, switch to a Bounty World, and see if you can work your way up the Rogue/Bounty Hunter highscore tables.

Similar to the changes we made to the way PvP worlds work to prevent people from using fun weapons or low-level spells, we have updated the system to detect other ways of fighting without taking any risks. Now, if you see anyone in single-way combat who is fighting without taking any apparent damage over an extended period of time, you can jump in and teach them how fighting works.

That Pretty Much sums it up. Also when you kill your target, even if they are wearing crappy stuff, you can get lots of money. I killed my target when he had a dds and I got 200k worth drop.In runescape, can somebody explain the new bounty hunting wilderness worlds thing to me?
basically, if you were around when the wildy was all pvp, it's the same basic idea. you have to be standing in edgeville or at the ditch for you to log into a ';bounty'; world. also, they combined that with bounty hunter. when you're in that world for a half hour, you see an arrow on your mini-map and a name in the top right. that's your target. if you kill that person, you get another and so on...
Bounty Hunter wilderness is pretty much like old PVP worlds, except you can only be in the wilderness or edgeville. Also, i've heard that Jagex will release Bounty Hunter once again in about a month or so.

I went hunting and there was a deer that just looked at me and stomped his right front hoof what does it mean?

So what does it mean if they just stomp it's foot because two deer did that on the day.I went hunting and there was a deer that just looked at me and stomped his right front hoof what does it mean?
That is deer lingo for ';HEY! I see something there that doesn't belong...I wonder if I can scare it into moving by stomping my foot??'; My advice if this were to happen again is to attempt absolute stillness, though a deer has its life on the line, and so will outlast you most of the time. If you remain still, however, it may only run a small distance and check back in on you to see if you are in pursuit, then walk slowly away, leaving the other deer unaware of your presence.I went hunting and there was a deer that just looked at me and stomped his right front hoof what does it mean?
Whenever they stomp there feet at u, it's always a clear sign that the deer has smelled u or saw u, and knows that u r there; Alot of time they will also blow at u when they smell u or see u to alert any more deer that might be in the area; U need to start using some kind of cover scent to mask your smell; I like to use fox urine when the rut isn't in; Put a few drops on your boots, and when u get to your stand, throw a few drops in each direction (N,E,S,W); If the rut is in, u may want to ust Tinks 69; Alot of people like to put some of it in a cotton ball and hang the ball from a tree; It's also good to put some on yourself and around your stand, as described earlier. Hope this helps u out..
I say it was LOVE at first sight,He probably felt tingley all over.

It in caribou and moose means STOP ,be inspected ,That can be reversed on especially moose etc, while they are running/moving away--An abrupt shout along with a foot stamp on ground will stop any moose etc. in its tracks not only once but several times ,this can be use full knowledge in taking pictures, incidentally sometimes the animal will walk back toward you if not alerted by smell from you. Has had it happen many times and this while talking out loud to them.

Edit--lol -Did this very thing last wk-nd from cabin veranda to a moose seen in binoculars across pond and up a big bog approx.1/2 klm. and the pond is 1/2 klm.--moose was getting close to edge of bog and near woods, wanted the wife to see him so I stamped hard on veranda and shouted (No Wind) he stopped and looked across pond in our direction for a minute or two ,lotsa time for a good look.

.The deer only saw you and couldn't have smelled you,if he did he would have been gone like a bat outta hell.
They saw you and were trying to make you move so they would know what you were. I assume you held tight and they just quited down after a few minutes and went about as normal as before. Or they smelled you, in either case they were trying to get a reaction. Hold tight and they will go back to what ever they were doing in a few minutes.
Generally this is a younger inexperienced never been shot at deer trick. The deer saw you thats for sure but stomping a hoof at you was trying to figure out what exactly you are and if you pose a threat to them. If you would have made any sudden moves you would have seen ';white flags'; tails as they ran off.
They instinctively sensed there was something not right, either by their sense of smell, hearing, or eyesight.* They are demonstrating being nervous, and uncertain about what has entered their Outdoor Environmental Wilderness.*.. They Live there you don't.*
usually means they are starting to get a lil etchy about the area there in and nervous too but sometimes its just done for no reason my advice is to sit tigh and just freeze for about 30 secs to a min

    ssssssshhhhhhhoooooooooooooottttttt mmmmmmmeeeeeee
stomps and blows are warnings to other deer. to see if you move. it sences danger or that something isn't right in the picture
I am not an expert in deer language, but the times that I have seen this, it was a doe calling her fawn.

  • Wanting to get a pellet rifle for rabbit hunting?

Im just wondering if an pellet rifle would even kill a rabbit. I'm looking at a few gamos and only looking to spend $250-300. Would it get the job done? How many fps at least must it shoot, thanks in advance!Wanting to get a pellet rifle for rabbit hunting?
    %26gt;%26gt;Rabbit hunting - fps%26lt;%26lt;

It's about the fpe not the fps***

It takes a minimum of 5.0fpe at impact with a perfect head shot, for a clean, humane kill on a rabbit.

    550fps - 7.9gr pellet = 5.31fpe

A very good pellet gun for rabbit hunting is the Benjamin 397

    http://www.pyramydair.com/p/benjamin-she鈥?/a>

The 397 is a very well made, reasonable powerful, and reasonable accurate rifle at a great price(around $140) - You can expect 1/2in 3 shot groups at thirty yards, and if you take reasonable care of a 397 your kids will pass it down to theirs

A .177 caliber RWS 34 would be even better

    http://www.pyramydair.com/p/rws-34-air-r鈥?/a>

IMO, this is the best ';value'; air rifle made in the world today. Much better than anything made by Gamo.

The RWS is powerful, and accurate enough to take rabbit out to around 50 yards.. The RWS 34 comes with a lifetime warranty, most Gamo rifles come with a 1 year guarantee, that alone should tell you something...

***Gamo uses ultra light PBA Raptor(5.4gr) pellets to wildly inflate the muzzle velocity of their rifles...

IMO, around 900fps is the best for sporting air rifles*...A pellet tends to become unstable and inaccurate as it approaches and or exceeds the speed of sound....';Around'; 900fps gives you the best combination of accuracy and trajectory...

*For 10m target guns, they perform best between 550-600fps

    RWS 34 - RWS Superdome(8.3gr) pellets - trajectory

if you sight-in at 42 yards - you will be 1/2in low at 8 yards - dead on at 14 - 1/2in high at 28 yards - then, 1/2in low again at 48 - That is a very flat and inherently accurate trajectory

Jim Chapman - Rabbit hunting, with his favorite small game air rifle, a .177 caliber Beeman C1, 850fps with RWS Superdomes(8.3gr)

    http://www.americanairgunhunter.com/webc鈥?/a>

He takes a jackrabbit at 44 yards with one shot to the head. This is not a stunt shot, but it is near the limit of his rifle's capability.Wanting to get a pellet rifle for rabbit hunting?
The Gamos are perfect for airgun hunting. I've seen a wild pig killed with one on a hunting show so im positive that with good shot placement, it will take care of a rabbit. Youll want at least 700 fps and the gamo break barrels are more than that.
forget a pellet gun.. go buy a 20 GA shotgun

Hunting a Rich Man's Sport? Do you think it is harder and harder for people to break into hunting?

I am not just talking about guns being expensive I am talking about guide and trespass fees and the cost of out of state licenses and all the associated costs.Hunting a Rich Man's Sport? Do you think it is harder and harder for people to break into hunting?
The hardest thing for most people is that the best hunting areas are usually private property for one reason or another. I've hunted for years on public land with moderate success. However, the one year I went on private, it was a matter of 'sit here, one will be by between 7-9. So in a way I guess it is because landowners for the most part are willing to let someone hunt on their land.Hunting a Rich Man's Sport? Do you think it is harder and harder for people to break into hunting?
Naturally it is, however not if you buy good used firearms, because a new firearm doesn't shoot any better than a good used one.* Sorry we can't turn back the clock, life goes on, everything has become more expensive.* Everything except an honest days pay, for an honest days work.* Thanks to American Employers and the U. S. Government who continue to keep people in abject POVERTY.*
Of course it is, and this is how and why {off the record of course} it was explained to me by a senator. In our state we have three separate hunting areas and when I try to get a hunting {big game} permit in my area, I get denied but if I apply for the other end of the state I get them thrown at me. The state simply wants to move tourism dollars around and this is there plan. If you have to travel to hunt you will spend money on hotels %26amp; food. So I simply apply for out of state licenses, if I'm going to spend money on motels %26amp; food I want to see some new areas. And yes more and more states are making it a law to hire a guide service { another income generator} to hunt in their fine states. The Goverment has taken more of our rights from us every year, they just do it quietly and slowly so as not to get noticed. We used to buy our hunting permits across the counter ';First come first served'; and they said that it wasn't fair so they changed the law to make it better for us. What cr^p !!
If you hunt in your own state, and don't use a guide, it's very affordable. Get permission to hunt on the land, and don't trespass, which will eliminate the trespassing fine. I think what's keeping people, mainly kids, from hunting is lack of interest of the outdoors.
Hunting becoming a Rich Man's Sport?

    Generally speaking - Yes.

I started hunting 35 years ago in Alabama. You could use a shotgun and get permission to hunt just about anywhere (sometimes, rarely, a very small fee might be involved). Just take off down through the woods and hunt!

Nowadays, the camouflage, the hunting clothes, the game calls, the hunting dogs (and their upkeep), the 4-wheelers, the 4WD trucks, the trailers, the tractors, the fuel %26amp; travel, the cost of food, the fancy guns, high priced scopes, the ammo, the lease/club fees, planting food plots, deer stands/blinds, getting permission (if you can) guided hunts,..........

It seems like it's out of control to me.

And to top that off, a lot of hunting type land in the South is being bought up (or already bought up), and forming hunting clubs on the land. Some of the membership fees can be high, for a regular working man.

I understand that it's big business. It just ain't nothing like it used to be.
No. A single shot shotgun can still be purchased for under $100 and a box of slugs for $3 or a box of shot shells for 4 or 5 bucks.

If you are talking about a guided hunt, of course it is going to be more expensive. Guides have to make a decent living too.
I agree the rising cost of license, habitat stamps, and all accessories needed, now gas prices has added an extra cost to hunters.

It is getting to be more and more of a wealthy mans sport
LOL Its only a rich mans sport if your a yuppie who must have all the gimmicks. Luckily here in Arkansas there are countless areas open to hunting, the Ouachita national forrest spans from OK all the way to central AR and its all open to hunting for no fee.

Hunting for meat can be far cheaper that buying it at the grocery store if you are smart.

Fishing too. During the spring and summer months I take my limit of 20 crappie, 50 bluegill, or 15 catfish daily.

My family of 3 eats wild game on a daily basis and it costs me far less than buying it from someone else.

If you think you need the best of everything, then you are overcompensating for your lack of ability.

My atv cost me $300 in 1986 and it still runs just fine today, I am more proud of my old busted up atv than a rich guy with a brand new one.
No way. An entry level rifle or shotgun can be purchased new for just a couple hundred dollars. In-state hunting is still fairly inexpensive in most places. There is plenty of public land available in most areas to be hunted for free.
I think the answer to this depends on where you hunt. People back East (I live in the West) have access to tons of tags, namely whitetail deer, and they are relatively inexpensive to get and a lot of hunters have access right in or near their backyard to good habitat. In the West things are a bit different. There is no surplus of game big game animals to be seen. The game herds here in Nevada for example, are managed very conservatively because there just aren't that many deer, elk, or anything else to go around. So the very few tags given out cost more, hunters generally have to travel some distance to get to an area that has deer in it, and hunters are very lucky out West to get a deer tag once every 3 or more years. So things being what they are out West, almost forces hunters to go to other states for tags which costs a small fortune in non resident fees. Because of these fees I do think hunting is slowly but surely becoming a rich man's sport (at least out West).

I do not live in whitetail country but, by all the reading I have done on deer hunting back East, I think new hunters can get into hunting for very cheap, and they have tons of access to deer to harvest. Like I said before this is not the case in the West, but the East seems to be where to go if you want to get into hunting.

As far as gear goes, sure you can find deals all over the place like ebay.com, gunbroker.com, and other places. You can outfit yourself from top to bottom with new or barely used gear off of ebay for less than you might pay for a new set of Danner boots from Cabela's. So gear is still readily available for super cheap prices and the only thing that might be a bit pricey is the ammo that the hunter might choose to shoot. But you can reload that stuff too!

So overall, I think it reallt depends on the kind of hunting you want to do. If you want to take a Dall Sheep from Alaska then you will have to pay upward of $12,000 for a chance to get a ram, but if all you want is some deer meat to fill your freezer for winter, then you should be able to get into hunting back East for very cheap.

How do I keep my feet warm while hunting.?

I have tried felt lined, thinsolate lined boots and my feet still get cold. How do I keep my feet warm while hunting.?
Sounds like you have low blood pressure, cause usually a pair of shoe packs will do the trick!......two pair of socks, one's cotton and the one overthat is wool.... along with some felt lined shoe packs.

Man Ive done that at -20 F and was just toasty. How do I keep my feet warm while hunting.?
Two answers here. First is to ensure your body's core temperature stays warm. That means insulating your chest and abdomen area first. The body's reaction to cold is to minimize blood flow to the arms, hands, feet and legs to keep the core temperature from falling. This (along with exposure to snow and the elements) is why feet and hands get coldest first.

Also, try some polypropylene sock liners or socks. This poly material is the same as the soft, synthetic fleece lining you find in some jackets. Combined with polypropylene ';long johns'; your legs and feet should stay warm.

It goes without saying that hunting footwear should be moisture guarded and have no leaks to allow water to get inside the boot. Nor should your feet be so warm they sweat in the cold.
Just remember that when your body gets cold the first thing that happens is reduced blood flow to your extremities. In cold weather always have a warm hat on your head. Try to keep your body warm and usually your feet will be ok also. I do use the warm packs when it's really cold but don't wear cotton socks for any reason. A thin pair of polypropylene or capilene socks then wool or fleece socks. But don't stuff your feet into your boots too tight because that will defeat the purpose by restricting the blood flow.
Foot warmers do the trick as long as you have the space in the boot. I prefer wool socks to cotton, it dries faster. Get heavy socks, the thickest you can fit.

EDIT: as for the foot packs, the chemicals inside require air to get and stay warm. Open them for a few minutes (5 or so) before you stick them in the boot, and then once in awhile manipulate your foot in a pumping action to get some more air down there, or take them off for a minute or two if you can.
I suggest a pair of bunny boots, these little suckers will keep you warm in. The white pairs weigh 48 oz. for each boot(or 6 lbs. per pair) in size 9R and are rated for temperates below -20 degrees F. Some white bunny boots apparently are rated to protect an inactive wearer to -40 degrees F. and an active wearer to -60 degrees F

Heres a pic if ya don't know what they are. Should be able to get them from a military surplus store or ebay.

    http://www.qm-supply.com/zenstore/images鈥?/a>

I own and wear bunnys all the time in the Canadian winter and most of the time my feet sweat!
If this is a really bad problem extra socks and foot warmers may not do it try';hot socks'; or battery socks---both can be found in sporting goods

keep extra dry cotton socks for replacing inside sock if damp --wearing 2 pair [best choice] natural not synthetic is the best way to go with these heat producers---be careful---don't let them get too warm---i don't use them myself---i stay warm enough but i have 2 male hunting buddies that do

    and they love them
I have the same problem when I hunt. I found that wearing two pairs of wool socks can keep my feet pretty warm. It may make your boots a bit tight, but its worth it to keep your feet from freezing.

One guy mentioned those warm packs. I'm not so sure about those, it may just be me but they don't seem to last a very long time, especially if you are hunting for four hours or more like I sometimes do.
    i had the same problem

    my solution?

    http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores鈥?/a>
try using a plastic bag. put your feet in that, that will trap all the hot air. also use thick socks specifically for hunting. also you don't need to hunt longer than it takes for you to get cold -- take frequent brakes. there's no reason to freeze.
1000gr insulated boots, two pair of wool socks and little hotties for you feet. The heat packs actually stick to the inside of your boots and keep you feet warm
    Have you tried wool socks?

My feet get cold a lot and the wool socks seem to help. Don't try plastic bags- that will keep the moisture around your feet and will cause foot problems.
I use those foot warming pads when I have to. But I live in the desert so that's not really an issue out here. Even in the cold months.
I would say wool socks. Used to wear them (I used to work outside in winter months) they helped.

If I am interested in hunting in Africa, where is the best place to do so and what to hunt for?

Within 10 years I plan to travel to Africa on a hunting safari. What would be the best animal(s) to hunt. Where, in Africa, are they located and is there a safe place in Africa to hunt? One more thing. Can you give me the best online website to help me plan and buy a trip?

Thanks so much.If I am interested in hunting in Africa, where is the best place to do so and what to hunt for?
The bast place to start is on your web. Use it to search for outfitters who guide in Africa. Check your local library for info. Watch for a large outdoor show in your area and visit with different guide services that come to those shows. You have plenty of time to do your search. If I am interested in hunting in Africa, where is the best place to do so and what to hunt for?
Jack Atcheson has an amazing website to help plan your hunt. I have always dreamed of a hunt in the dark continent. My dream animal is a cape buffalo (I've even bought a 416 Rigby for the hunt), but your list of animals might be different. On the atcheson website, you can check the list of animals, then it will tell you what parts of Africa that game is available in. If you're considering any thing from warthogs to giraffes to elephants, this is your site

    www.atcheson.com

Also www.cabelas.com has some hunts available in africa. I would definitely go through one of these two sites.

If there's room, I'd be interested in stowing away in your luggage.
Just do a web search by typing in %26gt; hunting in africa %26lt; in the web search area of your computer, and lots of sources and information is available to you.*
For Plains Game I would look at Namibia, and for Dangerous Game I would definitely go to Mozambique. I have hunted both of these countries among others but I would highly recommend these two. Check out this site, info@besthunt.co.za
probaly the best place would be in brush and open fields with some tree cover and the animal to hunt for if you want a dangerous hunt would be an elephant
Some animals are illegal to hunt, so be carefull.
there is no hunting in Africa

  • Are Rat Terriers and Siberian Huskies considered hunting dogs?

I was out with my dog and I came across a teenaged boy with the 2 breeds listed above. When I had caught up with them the dogs had already caught and killed a rabbit. I was actually surprised at how well trained these dogs were but I was also suspicious, both dogs had scratches on them and the Siberian had a small tear on one of it's ears. Are these dogs commonly used as hunting dogs? Are Rat Terriers and Siberian Huskies considered hunting dogs?
Both have very high prey drives.

The Rat Terrier was used to...well, hunt down and kill rats. Chase them into holes, corner and kill them. That sort of thing.

And most, if not all, northern breeds like huskies have very high prey drives.

It took no training for these dogs to be like this. It's all instinctual. Some are just more talented than others. Are Rat Terriers and Siberian Huskies considered hunting dogs?
As their name suggests, Rat Terriers were designed to control vermin around the farm, such as rats. They were also used to hunt small animals like squirrels and rabbits. That kid was actually using his Rat Terrier to serve its original function.

Traditionally, Siberian Huskies aren't really hunting dogs. Unsurprisingly, they're typically sled dogs. The semi-nomadic Chukchi people of Siberia began training them to pull sleds hundreds of years ago. However, many Huskies have high prey drives. (A dog's prey drive is his predatory instinct to chase and/or kill a small, fast animal like a squirrel or a cat.) Since they're working dogs with prey drive, they could certainly be trained to hunt. (The average Husky just wouldn't be quite as skilled as a breed designed for the job.)
well i would question the owner allowing them to kill, definitely the scratches something doesn't add up.

But to answer your question huskies were bred as sled dogs not hunting dogs but still have a very strong prey drive to survive the cold. Rat terriers were bred not as hinting dogs like a hound but as vermin killers and pest removal. They were bred to hunt down and kill things like rats, hence the name.
rat terriers - yes. They were used to chase rats and other small animals out of holes and tunnels in the ground.

    siberian huskies - no. They are in the ';Working Group';
    NOT SIBERIAN HUSKIES!

    Theyre working dogs!
Huskies aren't but terriers were bred to go after rats. Even a hunting dog could get scratched up in a hunt though.
Well its all in the name with the rat terrier...but most dogs can eb trained to hunt, its instinct
Technically speaking, Huskies are considered a ';working breed';. I have never known anyone who had a Husky just for hunting. OTOH, they're certainly capable of capturing and killing game. But both dogs, generally, have traits that lend themselves well to hunting.

Also, keep in mind that ';hunting'; means different things or tasks:

    --tracking/flushing

    --pointing

    --treeing

    --defeating

    --fetching

Depending upon the skill, you may want a dog that can go to ground (like a Border Terrier or JRT), a dog with a soft mouth (that can handle a bird without crushing it), a dog that can kill another animal, a dog that bays when it captures the scent, a dog that is silent and can stalk effectively.

Rat Terriers definitely are capable of being hunting dogs. The Decker line of ratties was bred specifically to hunt bears. The person who named the Rat Terrier (Teddy Roosevelt) used them for small game hunting. In the South, they're very big as squirrel and rabbit hunters. That's because they have a terrier's mentality and ability to tolerate pain and can go to ground to some extent, with sight hound (ability to spot movement and see better than most dogs), and scent (beagle is bred into the breed) so incredible tracking ability and extremely agile.

Finally, a dog can be a great hunter, well trained and, depending upon the function, acquire some scars. Send a JRT into a hole after a fox and it's likely going to get some damage when it corners the fox. Ditto with a dachshund after a badger. And hunting itself (going through brush at speed) can cause damage--my rat terrier has had torn paw pads twice from chasing squirrels in broken brush, I know of another dog who suffered a torn tail just because of the brush.

Which breed of horse is best for hunting with?

I'm assuming that you don't mean like fox hunting, but hunting in the woods, like a trail horse. Almost any breed can be used, although the most popular would be a quarter horse mix. A hot-headed horse, such as a thoroughbred probably wouldn't be as good. Good luck

What types of feed should I use besides corn for my automated feeder for hunting season?

I personally use an Apple flavored corn in my feeders. It seems to work rather well.

If you want to feed year round I recommend you get one of the large tri-pod feeders. They can hold upwards of several hundred pounds of feed.

As for the feed to use? Regular corn is good. Corn gluten is even better. There are several blends available. Since you are obviously wanting to use the feeder to increase the size and health of the deer you feed, you should go to your local farmers co-op or feed store. They can give you more detailed explanations of the nutritional values for each type of feed and they can sell you the feed in a bulk form to save you money.

    Good luck to ya.

Try actually hunting. Where is the sport if you sit in a tree stand and wait where you have been feeding the deer all season.

What is involved in applying for a hunting lisence and a fishing license?

and when do you do this? What is involved in applying for a hunting lisence and a fishing license?
It varies from State to State, In FL you have to have a Hunters safety course to get a Hunting License. You just have to have ID for a Fishing License. And you don't need either of these until you are 16.What is involved in applying for a hunting lisence and a fishing license?
Just like stated above you can generally walk into a sporting goods store or walmart and buy a hunting license. But double check your hunting laws, most states if not all require a hunters permit.
well, it depends on the state. certain stores, such as outdoor shops, sell licences. you go there with some ID, make sure u know ur social security number, and u just buy them there. if u buy out of state, they are expensive.
Most States require a 'hunter safety' course for a hunting license.

Most places a fishing license is just 'pay the man'.

Is Hunting with flechette shot shells illegal?

Sole purpose would be extending range and tightening patterns for deer hunting. 12ga flechette shells-where can I get them?Is Hunting with flechette shot shells illegal?
I agree with Gregg. The Geneva convention banned the use of flechette rounds by the military quite a while ago, and I figure, if the military finds them to be ';inhumane'; for killing people, then animals should apply also.

Have you ever shot one?! They fly for sh!t. They are a novelty round. Kind of like BOLO rounds. You can find all kinds of crap to shoot out of your shotgun, but morally, stick to shooting targets and trees with that crap.

-And PLEASE don't EVER consider them for home defense! You will do more time in prison than Manson. Is Hunting with flechette shot shells illegal?
Flechette rounds wouldn't penetrate enough. They are relatively light projectiles, and definitely weren't made to trump standard ';good ol''; 00 buckshot in terms of distance. Flechette shells are just gimmicky. They serve no real purpose other than to show of to friends. Do not use these for hunting. I'm very sure that there are laws regarding them unsuitable for hunting, and may land you some hefty fines, especially if an angry game warden stumbles upon a deer that just ran three hundred yards after getting hit with those. Just use slugs if you are going to hunt.
You would be ill advised to use something like that on a deer! Buck shot has wounded more deer than slugs because people just don鈥檛 get the range limitations of buck shot. I witnessed a fool blast at a deer 80 yards away with buck shot. Out of the 4 shots only one pellet hit the deer and it broke its leg. We spent hours tracking that deer and never found it after covering a few miles.

Buck shot has a max range of about 40 yards depending on what pattern the shotgun has.

Flechette shells are a novelty round and are not for hunting applications. Hell I wouldn鈥檛 even use it for home defense.

So I agree with the others.
YES! and its a terrible idea!

a shotgun doesnt generate the velocity needed to stabilize a flechette in-flight. because of this, they would probably keyhole and fail to penetrate. this was the main reason flechette rounds were discontinued in '66 in the m79 grenade launcher and was replaced later by rounds loaded with #4 buckshot.

now, if you had a fire base full of 105mm howitzers and were trying to counter massed human-wave attacks this would be different! :)
It's illegal in my state to use a shotgun unless it has a slug...not even buckshot is legal. I can't imagine it would be legal anywhere to use flechettes. If it is, it's just because they haven't taken the time to outlaw it YET. These rounds would be horribly ineffective on deer.
Flechettes are designed for shooting in heavy cover. Not to extend range.

It is illegal to hunt deer with buckshot in many states now.. and its illegal in all states to hunt with flechettes.
    http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/catalog1/i鈥?/a>
Yes and if you want distance, use rifled slugs or get a rifled barrel and get sabots. I can take deer at 250 yds with a sabot round.
Extending range? flechettes? I don't think so....just the opposite.

The best for that would probably be a .223. Its heavy enough to take down the coyotes but for the squirrels a .17 or .22 would be perfect. If your not looking to eat any of them but your trying to rid your land of the nuisance animals then go for a .223. Its a ar-15 caliber and pretty good gun.
Have a look at Winchester's model 70 bolt action rifle. I've owned 2 of them, a 300 winch mag, and a 25-06, which were both finely accurate and easy to shoot. The factory triggers are also very good, and adjustable.

Canada has strict laws and you need a firearms certificate beside the hunting license! best check with your local gun store and ask them what all is required and how long it will take. How long does it take to get hunting license?
If it is a one day hunting course it can last up to 11 hours, without any hands on experience. If it is a regular hunting course it can last up to 3 days with something like 3 or 5 hours a day, with hands on experience like shooting guns and taking small hikes up into mountains and survival stuff.
It was very fun and simple for me to get my hunting license. All you have to do is sign up for a course, either a 1-3 day course. they also have courses online. I would recommend a 3 day course because it is more hands on experience and it is very enjoyable. Good luck

What 12 Gauge Pump is better for hunting water fowl, a 835 mossberg or a remington 870?

I know this might be a kind of ford vs gmc question but is one brand more reliable than another or just all around better gun?

What 12 Gauge Pump is better for hunting water fowl, a 835 mossberg or a remington 870?
When I was growing up in the 70's, Mossberg used to market their brand through Western Auto, Sears, (under the Ted Williams brand), and others.

It was considered lesser brand, but a lot of those guns are still around today. Either one will suit you fine. The shooting public is pretty well informed today, and any of the firearms manufacturers have to turn out a quality product or they will not remain in business. What 12 Gauge Pump is better for hunting water fowl, a 835 mossberg or a remington 870?
You are right, it is a ford vs gmc question. I have both and I prefer the 870 because it is sturdy, while the Mossberg is loose. But, the new Mossbergs have double action bars now, so they are fairly solid.

Both are reliable and easy to fix if they do have the rare mechanical problem.

It boils down to which one you like better, for whatever reason.
According to the ';experts'; the Remington 870 is, ';probably the best shotgun ever built. When you pull the trigger, it goes bang.'; I agree. I've owned several shotguns, and of all of them, my 870 has out performed, out shot, and out worked all of them.
Mossbergs tend to be built better. I compared those two guns myself and the Remington seemed loosely put together. The 835 feels to be built a lot more sturdy. Other than that there are really no differences. So I would go with the 835. I ended up buying the Mossberg 500 though
Remington 870 no question. The Remington 870 pump will never brake down, and if it does is easily fixed in seconds. It is accurate, easy to shoot, light, and will last you your whole life and can be passed on. I shoot an 870 from 1965 and i works like new.
835 becuse i smoked an 870 in clays but both are reliable but through experiance the 870 has more access to parts in small rual towns than an 835 but the 835 is still a good gun.

What on earth do most people think ';hunting dog'; means?

I wonder if ';taunting the polar bear until the human can shoot it'; is considered hunting.....

You already know that in general people are morons when it comes to dogs... I don't know how to explain ';hunting dog'; to the average moron... sorry :o(

I can tell you that Bernese are abysmal at hunting... the Sam keeps trying to ';help'; them figure out how to catch the various yard rodents - to the extent of dropping half dead ones at their feet... the Bernese are half-hearted in their attempts to dispatch them... although they are good at trenching to dig them up. Thank heaven's for the Sam or we'd be overrun with moles. What on earth do most people think ';hunting dog'; means?
I usually describe my dogs as Dachshunds, involved in field sports. I do not generally encounter and associate with people who are not familiar with hunting dogs, though. I'm a LOOOONG way from the city. Are you Blunt Object? One of your answers about prohibition was almost identical, want to come hunt dogs up this way? We got an abundance of rabbit this winter.

ADD: I don't know how to explain to people that their dog of a hunting breed that does not hunt is ***NOT*** a hunting dog.
Hunting dogs - dogs with drive.

But, do you have the slightest clue that ';hunting dog'; is going to mean different things depending on where you happen to be standing. If you go down south, it ain't a huntin' dog les it's a Cur. If you're up in north, better have a pointer, spaniel or retreiver.

So get off your little head trip here.
A hunting dog is one that actually hunts. It could be a pointer, Golden, dachshund, beagle, border terrier, spaniel.

If it's a hunting breed, but doesn't hunt, then it's not a hunting dog.

I own dachshunds that actually hunt, woodchuck, rabbit etc.
Personally I always thought hunting dogs were dogs like beagles , bloodhounds or pointers who had a keen sense of smell? I assume theyre called hunting dogs because theyre used by hunters to sniff out the whereabouts of whatever theyre searching for..
A dog that is bred to hunt eg. Spaniels, beagles those kind of dogs.

Why what do you think it is?
most people think of hounds.. but many breeds can be hunting dogs.. retrievers, pointers, spaniels, terriers, etc.. just depends on what type of hunting the person is wanting to do

We eventually plan on building something more permanent there, but not at the moment (and probably not within the next two years). Can we deduct the interest we are paying on our owner financed mortgage on the property from our federal income taxes? I have land and I have an RV on it that we use for hunting there, can I deduct the interest on my taxes?
It should qualify as a ';second home'; so you could deduct it. Even a boat with sleeping facilities, etc. qualifies, so your RV should be OK as a second home. You could deduct the interest and the property taxes on your Schedule A.I have land and I have an RV on it that we use for hunting there, can I deduct the interest on my taxes?
You can deduct mortgage interest on two homes. The RV qualifies as a second home. If it is anchored to the land, and not moveable, then the land is part of the home. If the RV is moveable, the land on which it sits is not part of your home.

So anchor that RV to the land, and then you can deduct the mortgage interest. You will need the name, and SSN of your mortgage holder.

There are limits to the amount of mortgage interest. The general limit on acquisition debt for mortgage interest deduction is $1 million.
    Yuppers.
Actually yes, as a second home, if you itemize.

what sort of hunting requires the least amount of finical investment and maximum amount of meat. what weapons cost what and can take down what?

duck hunting is also of interest as I eat a lot of duck and it isn't cheap.

I'm Canadian so tips on hunting zebra would not be very helpful. Can anyone point me to a breif hunting introduction?
Duck is likely to remain expensive. Bag limits are small,

the season short, the equipment expensive.

Deer Elk, and Moose are Canadian natives, Caribou in the far Northwest,

and you get a lot of meat per shot.

A suitable rifle is not all that expensive.

As an introduction though, developing the skill required to make an

ethical clean kill will not be cheaply or easily aquired.

You're talking about a major commitment in money, time %26amp; effort.

Are you up for it?Can anyone point me to a breif hunting introduction?
Being in Canada gives you access to a lot of hunting opportunities, from pheasant and quail, duck, geese to deer, bear and moose, etc. Canadian laws require a few more hoops to jump through than most places in the US,but aren't difficult. Talk to a local sporting goods shop or gun shop and they can get you started. There are web sites too.

Shot guns are for game birds and some hunting, like rabbits, and rifles are for larger game. There is a lot of useful information in the Chuck Hawk links and the Montana Hunter Education information is a good primer for hunting information.
grab a gun, aim it (I said aim not point!!!) at your desired target, shoot the desired target in its vital organs(heart, lungs, brain, etc.) and then do your little victory dance and tag your animal, and then gut it. (need me to tell you how to gut something to??? Hopefully not.)
basicly you wonder around in the woods till you find an animal....kill it any way you can and take it home and eat it.......

How can I prevent my broker from hunting my stop?

First, have any of your seen your stop order hunted? - Second, do you have any advice for how to trade without having to worry about my market maker hunting my stops?

-How can I prevent my broker from hunting my stop?
It's happended to me too, and it does suck.

It's pretty common knowledge that this happens because most orders are visible to market makers and if they're bored, they usually let the stock run a bit to take out the stops, especially if they're close by.

For a market maker, it's easy money.

But there is something you can do!

You can continue to put stop orders in, or you can see if your broker has contingent orders that you can submit instead. With the brokers I use, I can put in conditional orders that do everything that a stop order does, except it's invisible to the market makers because it's held inhouse until the condition is met.

Not all brokers have them, but the better brokers like Optionsxpress, thinkorswim, and so forth do. That's one reason those brokers are rated so highly.

What's also nice about it is that I can set a contingent order based on my target price and another one for a regular stop and as many other ones that I want. Whereas with a regular stop order, you only can have one active order at a time.

It's a great tool that your mainstream companies like Fidelity, etc do NOT have. Instead, some of them have a ';trigger'; order which has like no flexibility and totally sucks.

Anyways, let me know if you have any questions.

Hope that helps! How can I prevent my broker from hunting my stop?
If this is a problem, you need to

    1) report it to the SEC (if you can prove that he did orders based on your stop)

    2) find another broker - perhaps an automated one so that there isn't someone who can query what you're doing.
That would be illegal, but we know what you mean. It's just not your broker doing it. It the floor traders and specialist.

If your stops are hit too often, maybe you are putting them too close or in the wrong place. It depends on the market, and is not an exact science.

I quit using them on the Dow mini futures, and just watched it like a hawk (couldn't even take time to go pee). Just using a stop increases the likelihood of a loss, albeit a small one, but those add up.

There is no way to ';prevent'; anything. But the best way to keep from getting hit is to stay away from movements.

Stay on the other side of support and resistance, or Fib lines, or combinations of these with Highs and Lows.

    Good luck.
It is not your broker. It is the speculists. They especially like to clean out the stops. Easy money.

Include how long the sessions are when they are most productive and how long you wait before rattling again. I will not be moving around i will be in one stand. Thanks for your help!In your experience how long do you do your rattling antler sequences when deer hunting?
Never waste your time by rattling before the onset of the rut, or after does are readily available for breeding, remember that. Time your rattling to when you see the mature bucks chasing does and being refused by them.

This is a obvious signal that testosterone levels are close to maximum and that bucks will be set off by a fight. Scrapes should also be red hot at this time. When scrapes go cold it means the time for rattling has passed.

It is advisable to try for 60 seconds or so. Wait for approximately 15 minutes and go again but for less time (about 45 seconds or so). Repeat this procedure. In your experience how long do you do your rattling antler sequences when deer hunting?
The key to rattling in bucks is the Buck to Doe ratio has to be high....if you only have a few bucks and hundreds of does rattling will be a complete waste of time.

Rattling sequences should be no more than 30 to 45 seconds....DO NOT OVER rattle....dont forget to grunt and snort wheeze along with the rattling

Wait about 2-3 minutes then rattle again only do this 3 or 4 times in an hour period Unless you SEE a buck walking away from you...then rattle...make some noise get his attention...hes moving away anyways so try to lure him in for the shot.

Try for 60-90 seconds on the first sequence. Wait about ten minutes before you start another sequence. The second sequence should last about 45-60 seconds. Wait another 10-15 minutes before going once more for about 45-60.

What's better for small-medium game hunting crosman storm xt or the quest?

I'll be shooting anything smaller than raccoonWhat's better for small-medium game hunting crosman storm xt or the quest?
Flip a coin... Literally. Or pick the one you like better because they're nearly identical guns. The Quest and the Storm produce basically identical energy levels (13 ft-lbs of muzzle energy or around 850 fps with 8 grain lead pellets). (Both guns have ample power for birds, squirrels, cottontail rabbits, and jackrabbits. Accuracy will be the limiting factor. Anything much bigger than a jackrabbit and you'll need a more powerful gun.) They're going to produce basically identical accuracy levels (1-1.5 inch groups at 30 yards). The only real difference I can see is the cocking effort is 31-32 pounds on the Quest and 28 pounds on the Storm. What's better for small-medium game hunting crosman storm xt or the quest?
It's just like ';J Kirsch'; said, all of the .177 Crosman** break barrel rifles in the $100 range give nearly identical performance.

    **Quest, Phantom and Storm XT

IMO, all of the Chinese built Crosman springers are very poorly made. If you like to shoot a lot, you're going to be lucky if the rifle lasts 2 months

Will a 243 suffice for wild boar hunting?

I know this farmer that has a wild boar problem and he is letting me hunt on his property. I've never hunted wild boar so can someone give me some tips

I was just wondering if a 243 has the stopping power to take down a pig.

He said their a couple 350lb+ pigs. Will a 243 suffice for wild boar hunting?
Yes its enough, people hunt them with bows and that takes them down the .243 will do nicely, its not ideal but it will get the job done, shot placement is everythingWill a 243 suffice for wild boar hunting?
I have seen hogs taken with a hatchet, yes the 243 will do it. Most pigs are 175 or less. shot placement is everything.

Use a good bullet that will hold together, a soft point ot a soilid. A hollowpoint will get torn up.

With a small bore, unless you get a heart shot, it won't fall over dead. But if you shoot in the shoulder and hit the lungs and veins, it will go down. Just sit ond wait about 15 minutes after the shot. He won't get far. But if you chase him, the adreniline will kick in.

Shoot, wait, track. you'll be fine.

People make hogs out to be toughter than they are. As far as a hog killing you, well. Im 39 years old and I've never heard of that happening in real life. I wouldn't sweat it.
Hmmmmm ---- If the .243 is all you have then use it... Its a little light in my opinion but if the shots are placed right then the .243 will work... If you havent purchased a rifle yet then consider a larger cartridge.... At least a .270 --- The .308 is a good choice also...... Consider the 2 below rifles if you ahvent purchased one yet.......
No! You need to try to kill the pig outright, or as quick as possible. Not only do hogs have thick skulls, but heavy plating in the shoulder area. Speed of the bullet isn't as important as weight and impact. 7mm, 30-06, 300, 338 all are big enough and pack enough knock down that you don't have to run for a tree if you don't kill him out right.

Think, one shot one kill. More isn't always better!
I'd prefer a 475 Linebaugh but with proper placement a 243 will do the job. You may want to carry a large revolver too in case you get into heavy brush and you need something that will be easier to handle in close quarters. Be careful, thay can get nasty and charge when you least expect them to.
Yes, a .243 is enough for those pigs, but if I was going after them I'd take my .308 Ruger model 77, or maybe my M-14, also a .308.

You'll have fun wuth the 243 as long as you are careful and remember that the pigs you are shooting can kill you if you make a bad mistake. Just don't mess up and shoot to kill.
For hogs that large I wouldn't use anything smaller than a .308 Winchester (same size as the .243 but it shoots a much heavier bullet), but a .350 Remington Magnum is better and a .458 Winchester Magnum is even better! Re-read Mill Creek's post to see all the right reasons. Good reply, Mill!

    H
yes. a 243 will take down a bore i use a 30-30 and take shots to 100m and drop them no worries it's just about where your shot is placed i have taken down scrub bulls with a 30-30 and a 243 has a smaller prjectile but more bang behind it. if your really keen use a bow. just don't piss him off.
Go for the head in the ear area and use a ballistic tip. My wife shot one at 125 yards and dropped him dead he was about 400lbs its called shot placement. Don't know why everyone shoots a gun that gets meat on both ends.
Yep with proper shot placement most calibers will work well with adequate penetration. I have seen numerous hogs up in the 300 pound+ range taken with .223 remingtons just fine. It all boils down to shot placement.
It'll do if that's what you have. I hunted hogs with a 6mm Remington for years. But if you get the opportunity to use something a little bigger, it'll help.
    44mag 357mag works well
    yes it will work fine.

What is the better choice for a hunting bow? Mathews DXT or the Hoyt Katera?

I am getting ready to buy a new bow after this season, and i have narrowed it down to the mathews or the hoyt. At first i was leaning towards the hoyt because of the price but i recently discovered that the local pro shop carry's both bows for the same price. What is the better choice for a hunting bow? Mathews DXT or the Hoyt Katera?
Hoyt makes a fine bow, but the Katera is not my favorite- they went for the speed by lowering the brace height, and this does not make a forgiving hunting bow.The Dxt is a great hunting bow. However, you should check out the Bow-Tech Guardian while you are deciding. Good luck. What is the better choice for a hunting bow? Mathews DXT or the Hoyt Katera?
ask to hold both bows. i would go for the lighter of the two, so that you can hold ti up longer if you have to. both bows will do the job fine so you cant go wrong ether way, but if you get the mathews you can say ';hey ive got a mathews and you don't.'; if you can shoot both bows and choose after you've felt how they shoot. good hunting.
In my opinion i believe that Matthews would be the better choice if the price is the same. thin is in and matthews has been know for making the best bows. although all of team realtree uses hoyt it is your decision talk to your local archery store owner for his perspective.
I think the best choice would be the one that works best for you. They will both perform the same job. See if you can shoot both and then go from there.
Mathews By a MILE and then some!
Find an indoor archery range and see what others your height and build are shooting. If these brands are to be considered, someone will be shooting one there. A real sportsman will share his pro's and con's with you and may even let you shoot his rig. Be ready, however, to consider a different rig if it seems many others there are doing well. Price and a factory warranty are not the best factors in a purchase. I suggest that on your 1st visit, just sit and watch. You know the old saying, ';Shoot and ask questions later';.

If Sarah Palin is pro-life why then does she not have a problem hunting and killing animals from a helicopter?

Sounds rather hypocritical to me.If Sarah Palin is pro-life why then does she not have a problem hunting and killing animals from a helicopter?
I don't think pro-life has anything to do with hunting animals. She never said she was a member of PETA!If Sarah Palin is pro-life why then does she not have a problem hunting and killing animals from a helicopter?
My dad is a hunter, mostly on ducks. He loves many animals like he has guinea pigs and dogs and a cat. I am an animal activist. He is also a pro life and a pro adoption which he adopted me in 60's. I don't think its right for these animal activist to attack on the hunters. I don't attack on my dad, because of his hunting. I have told my dad on that issue of hunting issue- I disagree with him on hunting issue, since I do not hunt, but have done the fish scalding(salmon) collect the fishes after they dies the minute, and throw them away as a ranger. I don't like the idea of the way the forest rangers or naturalists deal with the ariel thing, I rather for spaying instead to control the overpopulation. You must understand the hunting always been a Traditional way of life that started with British/ Irish/ Russian ancestors. If we as animal activists ask nicely and ask Sarah palin to let her how we don't like the idea and disagree with the Wild life and Fish Game Dept from the Forest Services. ( hint: I worked for Forest Service as ranger in past and the ranger decides them and often influence many things on every governors and presidents).Get it?, but I witness that myself as how the forest rangers-biologists do. Sarah Palin would respond to it differently and would be able to tolerate with changing the idea. Attacking the person over the issue would not make any difference. Only to have the Animal activist group and the forest rangers and to have Sarah Palin get together to go over like a presidental debate form style like that.
Hmmm... Let's apply the ';logic'; of that question to Obama. If he is pro-spreading the wealth around, then why does he contribute only about 7% of his own wealth to charity... and it was actually only about 1% until he decided to run for President and knew people would look at that? (McCain has consistently donated about 17% of his wealth for years, BTW).

But getting back to Palin, sorry, but most sane people don't place animals on the same level as a human baby. Apparently, you don't see a difference... How weird.
Because she is a Fundamentalist Christian and they think that since humans are on the top of the food chain that plants and animals are here for humans to exploit. The Amish are like that too actually. How did the Amish get rich? Puppy Mills.

EDIT: Pro-life, pro-choice has to do with views on human abortions.

Thumbs down? You think I'm wrong? HA. Wow.
how sad, so far most of these people seem to not care about animals lol

and Pro choice has nothing to do with animals yet she's screaming that its alright to kill what isn't human.

    someone on here said '; that's what animals where made for?';

    to kill them?

well yeah but isn't that one of the 10 commandments?

    that one shall not kill

i mean wtf is god really a murderer?

hmm no wonder we are heartless in that department we are what god is no?

    lol
pro-life is meant for humans. many humans do not believe in killing other humans, however, animals are not humans.

therefore, it is not hypocritical in the least.
Is a gene, she said was her father that make her interesting in hunting, is father to daughter gene.

Also don't forgot Dick Cheney also like to hunt, except he suck.
Some people look at a child differently than a hamburger, a piece of chicken, an egg or other animal. It is sad some people like yourself can not see the difference between human life and animal life.

Pro-life deals with people not animals.

I'm a Vegetarian not because I like animals but because I hate plants.
Haha - because the wolves aren't pregnant. Just kidding. I agree. None of her stances make any sense. She just ends up looking hypocritical.
Because when she says she is pro life she means human life.

If we use your line of thinking then when vegetarians say the don't eat anything that is alive how can they eat vegetables or wear anything leather?
She was born out of a elephants stomach and forever have cursed at the animal kingdom for that, thus hating whatever animal comes her way.
I guess it's different when the animals not in the womb anymore.
This is called animal control. When you shoot dangerous animal from a helicopter.
She doesn't dry gulch three-quarter born babies. Now talk about killing animals.

Jeff, I wonder if you are a moron. 'Just wondering
Unless she's hunting people from a helicopter, those are unrelated concepts.
There is a difference between people and animals!
Pro-life is another way of saying anti-abortion.
it's not hypocrtical because most ppl don't view animals the same as humans. plus if you want to get picky about it...isn't it her choice?
maybe she values human life above animals, like the Bible says.
Pro-life refers to humans, not animals.
Gotta eat. It's better than killing babies. Right Barrack?
The Christian bible says that man shall have dominion over all the animals of the Earth.
    Pro-life is pro HUMAN life.
    That's not what pro-life means.
You compare an animal to a human baby? Wow.
    pro-human-life
    Human life
    She is Pro -HUMAN life!

Hunting White-Tail Deer in Indiana. What do you do if you spot an Albino deer? Can you legally kill it?

No matter if it is a doe, a button or a buck? And hunting on my property?Hunting White-Tail Deer in Indiana. What do you do if you spot an Albino deer? Can you legally kill it?
In my state they prefer that you do kill albino or piebald deer. The theory is that they are genetically more prone to disease and should be culled from the herd.Hunting White-Tail Deer in Indiana. What do you do if you spot an Albino deer? Can you legally kill it?
No laws against shooting albino deer. But you do have to follow all state laws regarding deer hunting such as having a hunting license and only hunting deer in season.

As a side note, shooting an albino animal of any kind if supposed to be very very bad luck. Best to leave them alone than to try to kill one. Just my opinion.
Didn't find any reference to albino deer in IN regulations. So, I suppose it would be legal. In OK it is illegal. I did find a strange regulation though:

Some illegal rifle cartridges for deer hunting are the .30-30 Winchester, .444 Marlin and .45-70 Govt.

    http://www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/files/fw-鈥?/a>
Yes, there was an albino Buck, killed , and the picture was posted on the internet...sorry I didn't keep it. The deer is just a 'freak of nature' and is not protected.
    * Only if its in Season, or during Regular Deer Season Only, or unless your State has a Law against shooting Albino Deer.*
Never heard it wasn't legal anywhere and many news items attesting to the taking of albinos.
Never heard it was illegal, but it would be about the dumbest thing you could do.

Do you realize just how rare albino animals are?
i think their protected. check with the dnr in indiana for regulations.

IMO, as of right now the best all around deal on an air rifle in the $100 price range is the Gamo Big Cat** from Cabela's

    http://www.cabelas.com

Gamo Big Cat + 3-9x40 scope for $105

Gamo Big Cat + 4x32 scope for $90

**Refurbished = IMO, you're getting a better than new rifle and saving $50 on each package. A springer functions better after a break in period and the only parts that can be expected to wear out in normal use are the mainspring and piston seal. Replace those two parts and you have a good as new rifle, or better.

Take part of the $50 you save and add a custom GRT-III trigger($32) includes shipping

Its really not a hunting weapon for coons and not humane. It takes a vital shot with a real rifle like a 22LR for that or bigger or a shotgun.
