What on earth do most people think ';hunting dog'; means?

Do you experienced dog-people have a clue about how explain the widely misused term to the average pet-person?What on earth do most people think ';hunting dog'; means?
I wonder if ';taunting the polar bear until the human can shoot it'; is considered hunting.....

You already know that in general people are morons when it comes to dogs... I don't know how to explain ';hunting dog'; to the average moron... sorry :o(

I can tell you that Bernese are abysmal at hunting... the Sam keeps trying to ';help'; them figure out how to catch the various yard rodents - to the extent of dropping half dead ones at their feet... the Bernese are half-hearted in their attempts to dispatch them... although they are good at trenching to dig them up. Thank heaven's for the Sam or we'd be overrun with moles. What on earth do most people think ';hunting dog'; means?
I usually describe my dogs as Dachshunds, involved in field sports. I do not generally encounter and associate with people who are not familiar with hunting dogs, though. I'm a LOOOONG way from the city. Are you Blunt Object? One of your answers about prohibition was almost identical, want to come hunt dogs up this way? We got an abundance of rabbit this winter.

ADD: I don't know how to explain to people that their dog of a hunting breed that does not hunt is ***NOT*** a hunting dog.
Hunting dogs - dogs with drive.

But, do you have the slightest clue that ';hunting dog'; is going to mean different things depending on where you happen to be standing. If you go down south, it ain't a huntin' dog les it's a Cur. If you're up in north, better have a pointer, spaniel or retreiver.

So get off your little head trip here.
A hunting dog is one that actually hunts. It could be a pointer, Golden, dachshund, beagle, border terrier, spaniel.

If it's a hunting breed, but doesn't hunt, then it's not a hunting dog.

I own dachshunds that actually hunt, woodchuck, rabbit etc.
Personally I always thought hunting dogs were dogs like beagles , bloodhounds or pointers who had a keen sense of smell? I assume theyre called hunting dogs because theyre used by hunters to sniff out the whereabouts of whatever theyre searching for..
A dog that is bred to hunt eg. Spaniels, beagles those kind of dogs.

Why what do you think it is?
most people think of hounds.. but many breeds can be hunting dogs.. retrievers, pointers, spaniels, terriers, etc.. just depends on what type of hunting the person is wanting to do
hunting a dog
