You obviously know how to use the internet, so type in 'google' then once you get there type in Nebraska's DNR website. Then, do YOUR research YOURSELF.

Exact same thing with me as with Cougars %26amp; Texans.. it's easy to find b.s questions if the little red circle with the line thru it is by yours, Joe Bobbers, Korn, etc's screen name.

What is the best caliber for deer and bigger game hunting?

270 winchester or 30-06, those are the two classic standby cartridges for 'will handle anything in north america'What is the best caliber for deer and bigger game hunting?
By Caliber you mean the diameter of the bullet. Typically that is expressed in a fraction of an inch in decimals. So, a thirty caliber is .30, or 30 one-hundreds of an inch. A Cartridge is the entire package including the cartridge case which is named in any number of ways.

A 30-06 is really the US Thirty Cal of the year 1906. Many others are just called by the Company that developed the cartridge. .270 Winchester for instance.

Now - to answer your question. There is no correct answer.

This depends on many variables. Where do you hunt? What is legal in that area? What size deer are you hunting as it varies tremendously even in Whitetail Deer. What is you experience/skill level? For a basic beginner I usually reccomend the 270 Winchester. It has relatively light recoil, is easy to shoot accurately and has enough power for deer up to elk and moose if you place the bullet properly. What is the best caliber for deer and bigger game hunting?
Anytime ';bigger game'; is involved, I would not go with a cartridge less than a 30-06.

The 30-06 is a good compromise as would be the 303 and 8mm mauser.

If you're looking for something a little more powerfull, a 300win mag would certainly not be out the question for deer as it's somewhat popular as a pure deer round anyway by some people.

If you are going to be doing a lot of elk, moose, bear hunting, etc. - you may be better off with a 338.

I would rather be overkilling deer than wounding larger game.
For deer my favorite caliber is the .25-06 Remington. For anything bigger: .30-06, .308 Winchester %26amp; .270 Winchester. For something like the really big bears: .338 Win. Mag, .375 H%26amp;H Mag or even a .458 Win (or Lott) Magnum. In the lower 48 for the really large boars: .350 Remington Magnum (the original short magnum) or the 4-5-8.

H
The best choice for that purpose is the 30-06, because it will harvest any game in North America cleanly and efficiently. You have a greater variety of bullet weights to choose from with the 30-06.* It has harvested more Deer than any other caliber except for the 30-30 Winchester.* That speaks for itself, and should tell you something.* I prefer using the 180 or 220 grain bullets myself.*
many people consider the .30/06 to be the best overall caliber for north American medium and big game. you can use 150 grain bullets for varmints such as coyotes. move up to 168 grain bullets for white tailed deer, antelope, and mule deer. 180 grain bullets are good for black bear and elk. and the big 220 grain soft noses work well for moose and brown bear.

the ammo is cheap and easy to find in 30/06 because of its popularity.

other calibers you cant go wrong with include the .308 Winchester, .270 Winchester, the 7mm rem mag and the 300 win. mag
by bigger game i'm assuming you mean anything north america can throw at you... 7mm rem mag is probably one of the best all around choices if you are an average shot, its good for deer and up to black bear.. if you are dead on with your shot placement though .30/06, .308, 7mm-08, .30-30, among mony others are all rounds that CAN be used to drop big game... you just need to rely more on shot placement, if you are going to be hunting exclusively bigger game (ie moose, black bear, brown bear) then you may want to lok into .300 win mag or higher
The best caliber for deer is a .270...... Bigger game??? Your going to get a hundred opinions here.... Probably 30/06 or .300 Winchester mag for larger North American animals.......
Two calibers that are proven by time and results and with which you cannot go wrong; 30-06 and the 8mm Mauser.
.308 ruger.
7mm,30-06, 308 win, 270. 7mm-08 are some nice calibers for deer and bigger game
30.06 is a great round for big game. Just be careful of what is behind your intended target.
A lot of ppl state the 30-06, which is fine. I have a 7mm Rem Mag that has served me well.
Can't go wrong with a .30-06.

  • Can i carry a hunting knife in my truck in California?

i have a hunting knife with an 8inch blade that i would like to keep in my truck. I keep in secured in a sheath, but I'm not sure of the California laws on hunting knives, and didn't want to risk getting arrested. Can i carry a hunting knife in my truck in California?
Contrary to what you are going to see in a lot of answers, there is no general regulation of knives, other than switchblades, based upon length under California state law. (There are some laws applicable at schools and public buildings.) Under California law, this is a dirk or dagger, which means it would be unlawful to carry it concealed on your person. There is no prohibition upon carrying it concealed in a vehicle, so long as it is not on your person. (Pen C 12020.)

This is based upon state law. There may be some applicable local ordinances, you should check. I think those ordinances are unenforceable, but you don't want to be the one to test that. Can i carry a hunting knife in my truck in California?
You should keep it under your seat within drivers' reach, along with loaded handguns and extra ammo. Then drive erratically and be really aggressive toward the cops when they pull you over. Make sure to have someone in a follow-car get video of the whole thing and put it on youtube, so I can laugh at you.
carrying a knife in a truck is unlawful even you will be arrested if he see .
    Whatcha huntin- wetbacks?
It has to be below 4 in.
Would be much smarter to just call the police department or a lawyers office than asking here. I would say if you live in a big city no, don't risk it unless you intend to keep it out of sight of an officer if he pulls you over. If there is any chance that they would have probable cause to search your vehicle and they find it, they will likely charge you. If a cop sees it in plain view when he comes up to your vehicle, that qualifies as probable cause and can legally search your vehicle at that point.

If you live in a small town or rural, particularly where it is common and acceptable for people to be equipped for hunting or fishing, then I would probably just put it in the bottom of a tackle box or skinning bag and keep it out of sight. If you don't hunt or fish I wouldn't even carry the knife unless you use it for work, then I would put it in a toolbox. A knife in a toolbox is a tool. A knife in your glove box is suspicious, A knife holstered at your side is a weapon, and a knife under your drivers seat is a trip to jail waiting to happen.

If you have the knife for self-defense get rid of it. There are more effective tools for accomplishing that than a knife, that are also easier to get away with having on your person or in your car. The first obvious choice is to get a CWP (concealed weapon permit) and then carry a small firearm in a holster, in a location convenient for you and easy to keep concealed. Remember that allowing the public to see your firearm even while it is in your holster, could be considered brandishing if someone complains, and that could get your gun taken from you. So keep it to yourself. It is 50% less effective if everyone knows you have one.

If you can't carry a firearm I recommend getting a large maglite (flashlight). They are like a hard billy club and can put a bad hurting on someone. They are more effective than knives because you can actually stop someone with a maglite. With a knife any shorter than a short sword you give your opponent way too much time to mount a counter attack, even after they have been stabbed. Unless you stab them in the brain or heart, they will probably still be able to hurt you. If you strike someone anywhere with a maglite you are likely to break something on the first hit. Be careful with a maglite, a blow to the head could kill someone. It isn't much different than having a short aluminum bat. The good thing about the maglite is it is completely legal to carry as long as the bulb works. If you are carrying it on a belt loop the bulb must work or you will be charged with carrying an illegal blunt weapon.

Another tool that is much better than a knife for self defense is a claw hammer, or hatchet hammer. Again both completely legal as they are common tools. I wouldn't try to carry the hatchet hammer on a belt loop though, you would be asking for trouble from the law. Nobody is likely to even look twice if you are wearing a standard hammer though, especially if you also have a tape measure somewhere else on your belt. I kept a 10 pound sledge hammer in my truck right next to the drivers seat for years. I was not allowed to carry a firearm or weapon of any kind into some of the terminals I had to drive in for work every day, so I got an oversized sledge. Great for closing rusted trailer doors, AND getting people away from your truck that are trying to start trouble...lol.

Anyway, those are my suggestions. Since you didn't clarify why you wanted the knife in your truck I thought I would cover as many bases as possible.

How do I get hunting rifles (family heirlooms) from Korea to St. Louis MO?

My grandfather from Korea recently passed and left me some nice stuff, including several big game hunting rifles (very expensive) and I would like to bring them to where I live, near Saint Louis, Missouri. I will be flying to Korea soon, and I'm sure it wont be a problem to bring most of this stuff to the states, but I know almost nothing about importing guns. What is the most hassle free way to get them here? Checked baggage on the plane back? Mail them through postal service? Do they have to be disassembled and pieces sent separately? How do I get hunting rifles (family heirlooms) from Korea to St. Louis MO?
So long as they're not fully automatic, there aren't nearly the restrictions on long guns as there are hand guns. If you're going to Korea to pick them up, I'd first check with the airline regulations. Usually you just have to show ownership, declare them, and check the case w/no ammunition. (no carry-on, duh!). But again, check with the airlines as they will know for sure. People travel with rifles all the time so it should not be an unusual question.

If they are being shipped to you, a registered FFL dealer will have to handle the transaction. Almost any gun shop can help you with this for a small fee (usually $15-$20 or so). If you're gun-shop shy, even the Bass Pro hunting dept may be able to help out, at least answer some questions and reccomend a dealer to go through.

Good luck! How do I get hunting rifles (family heirlooms) from Korea to St. Louis MO?
Call Fed Ex 800-463-3339. They will be able to give you all the information you need on shipping from Korea. Each foreign company has different regulations along with the US Customs service so you are better off talking with a company that does these types of things daily.

Laws in the US don't apply to the rest of the world. Canada is their own sovereign country and they can make what laws they want.

Is this a hypothetical? We can kills our own beavers, and bears, moose, elk, deer and most all wildlife covered by each states Dept of Natural resources. You think we don't have moose, bear, deer, elk, beavers, etc?

If Dick Cheney and Sarah Palin were to go out hunting together?

Which one of them would come back alive? Also, explain your reasoning if you can.If Dick Cheney and Sarah Palin were to go out hunting together?
Palin would have Cheney field dressed and strapped to the hood of her car.

Palin knows how to handle a gun. Cheney obviously doesn't.If Dick Cheney and Sarah Palin were to go out hunting together?
I recommend that anyone who goes hunting with Cheney make sure that all of their paperwork and final wishes are in order before they venture off into the woods with him.
We could only hope for the best and neither of them return. My scenario has Cheney accidently shooting Palin as he tries to cover it up (Scooter can't help him this time.) he keels over from his bad ticker.
    Cheney would shoot a ';quail';.

    Palin would shoot a ';moose';.
    neither would come back

they're so stupid they'd shoot each other

or palin shoots cheney then gets run over by a moose
Hopefully, neither. With a little luck, they'd shoot each other at the same time. :)
Sarah Palin doesn't miss. I think that speaks for itself.

  • What is the best caliber for deer and bigger game hunting?

Can i carry a hunting knife in my truck in California?

i have a hunting knife with an 8inch blade that i would like to keep in my truck.

Well if you want to look at it from extremcatholic's point of view, then YES it is legal until you get caught, so are drugs and driving drunk, so you take the chance of getting your weapon confiscated and a healthy fine, but PA law says no you can not hunt with a semi pistol.Small game hunting with a pistol in Pennsylvania?
Technically it's not legal. The wardens of state game lands will come after you for it. That being said, you can get away with it easily if you live in one of those back-woods areas that are sparsely populated. I also live in PA. If I were you, I would do it anyway in a wide, open area (obviously not state game lands) and try to lay low.

Does a hunting jacket work for skiing?

I have a really nice camo hunting jacket, it's waterproof, blocks wind, and is very warm. Is that pretty much what a ski jacket has or is there more to it?Does a hunting jacket work for skiing?
That jacket will do the job. Most hunting jackets have a rough shell as opposed to the smoother shells on ski jackets, so the snow might stick to the hunting coat more than it would with a ski jacket, but just brush yourself off more often and you should be good. Don't bother blowing a load of cash on a ski jacket unless you plan to ski often.

I'm just the opposite. I will wear ski clothes when hunting.Does a hunting jacket work for skiing?
It will work fine for the first few times, maybe even a season or 2. The main drawback to it other than style is how much movement can you get in the camo jacket with little effort. If the jacket is stiff, it may interfere with your body movements and disturb your balance. Most of the military personnel that I teach wear there fatigues and are just fine for a day or 2.
Thats pretty much everything you need. Some ski jackets have ventilation systems so that you can adjust your temperature but other than that they serve the same basic function. The only things you're really missing out on not having a ski jacket are the cut of the jacket and that little loop hole for your lift ticket... but that can lace through a zipper no problem.

    Good Luck
yeah it will work. what you wear depends on the weather. if its cold and windy and wet you want something that will protect you from the elements. if its a warm sunny day then you dont need it but no a ski specific coat is not a necessity
For some snobs, its all about style. If you could care less what the locals or ski bums think, then wear your Carhartts if you want to. You will find snob skiers no matter where you go. Wear what you want and have fun!
If it keeps you warm and dry, rock it.

During it's open season. Not before nor after, though the later is by far the easiest. What is the best time of year for hunting legal wild game?
Game?... which game? There are different seasons for different game and a time for all seasons... a time for sowing, a time for reaping... oh... forgot, that's a song.

Legally hunting wild game is determined by the game, the type of hunting, the laws of the state and a host of other requirements.

Your question is as vague as my answer. What is the best time of year for hunting legal wild game?
The only legal times to hunt ';legal wild game'; is during the legally posted hunting season.

You don鈥檛 wont to gamble on hear say, for it will not save you from the fines that will be imposed if the hear say was incorrect.

Most states have seasons on crows even though it is not a game bird.

Some states even have bag limits that apply.

Some states have weapon restrictions as to gauge, shell capacity.

Some states do not allow decoys or electronic calls.

Is being fly slayer more impressive than successfully hunting a moose then field dressing it?

If by ';fly slayer'; you are referring to someone who can catch and kill more than 30 with their bare hands over the span of 12 hrs. (no swatter involved) than I'd say yes.

However, I give much respect to anyone who can field dress a moose in that time.

    Close call kimosabe. Good question.
No one with any brain thinks either is impressive.

But then, no one with any brain at all thinks killing a fly is the only thing Obama has ever done in his life or as president.

Why are wing-nuts so proud of being completely brainless? This puzzles me.
Flies are disease-spreading pests. Moose are innocent, defenseless animals. It is liberal to kill a fly, and right-wing to kill a moose.
Apparently, not every one in this country can swat a fly. They're so amazed by the chosen one's skills!

I personally think moose hunting and dressing is more impressive, but then again, I'm not a sheeple.

  • Do you think we should have kept the hunting rule?

In history humans used to kill animals to eat, but took only what they needed and used every thing. (From meat to blood)

They NEVER killed a mother with young, or the young on their own. But today humans have left that custom and there is a lack of respect for that cow or pig that was killed for our own bellies, they used to respect them allot.

So shouldn't we get it back? These animals have no pity or mercy from humans, we even call each other Cow and Pig to hurt.

What is the best time of year for hunting legal wild game?

During it's open season. Not before nor after, though the later is by far the easiest. What is the best time of year for hunting legal wild game?
Game?... which game? There are different seasons for different game and a time for all seasons... a time for sowing, a time for reaping... oh... forgot, that's a song.

Legally hunting wild game is determined by the game, the type of hunting, the laws of the state and a host of other requirements.

Your question is as vague as my answer. What is the best time of year for hunting legal wild game?
The only legal times to hunt ';legal wild game'; is during the legally posted hunting season.

Your state fish and game department will issue an annual digest stating hunting seasons, weapons requirements and limitations, as well as bag limits and other important rules and regulations.

Are you allowed to have more than 2 shells in the shotgun magazine for crow hunting in Pennslyvania?

I know in small game hunting your not allowed to use more than 2 shells in magazine exculding barrel though. But if im allowed to use 4 in the magazine i will take the advantage for crow hunting. Are you allowed to have more than 2 shells in the shotgun magazine for crow hunting in Pennslyvania?
    1 in the action + 2 in the magazine = 3 total.

In Pennsylvania, 3 is the limit for small game, furbearers, turkey, waterfowl, and crows.

It would be nice to have more rounds for crows. Are you allowed to have more than 2 shells in the shotgun magazine for crow hunting in Pennslyvania?
    Don鈥檛 Gamble

Contact you Department of Wildlife for that answer.

Call the up and ask that is part of there job to answer questions.

Each of these items you need to contact the Department of Wildlife for that answer.

The fines for mistakes will wreck a other wise good hunt.

Hope I was of some help.

    D58
It is not legal. You can only have a 2 shot capacity in your shotgun. Page 20 of the pa hunting and trapping digest. Better go with the hinge action.
I say go for it. It is unconstitutional for anyone to infringe upon your right to keep and bear arms. Your not breaking the law if the law is unconstitutional.
You can have 1 in the chamber and two in the magazine. That goes for anything you use a shotgun for.

Is being fly slayer more impressive than successfully hunting a moose then field dressing it?

In the way that when Obama does something small it is magnified by the media, yes.Is being fly slayer more impressive than successfully hunting a moose then field dressing it?
now you have done it. The brigade fans will out in force to show their disease of liberalism by attacking you hatefully.

No but it is much more useful as a skill and more environmentally forgiving.
doesn't take much to shoot an animal...and then field dress it.

seriously not that much to it.

    Yes, it requires more skill.
He would be a disgrace to any hunting tribe... and would Never get the girl.
well, at least he can catch his own dinner...but, personally, i'd go with the moose hunter

These animals have no pity or mercy from humans, we even call each other Cow and Pig to hurt.

just give him the bow and then tell him to pick the sight he likes and you will buy it also. People are picky about sights. It would be your best bet to insure he is happy with it.

Black bear hunting in the United States?

I was wondering if there were states where you can, and people do, successfully black bear hunt in the US? If so what is the best state?Black bear hunting in the United States?
We have some black bear hunting in Michigan. Contact the DNR for information about getting the necessary permit.Black bear hunting in the United States?
All the states that have substantial forested areas have a bear season. As a norm the farther south you hunt the smaller the bear. If you google records black bears, you will find that Pennsylvania has some monster black bears, so if its going from a 250 lb. bear to a possible 800 lb. bear you need to go to Pennsylvania for bear hunting. To me that is the prime location in the lower 48 states. Good luck.
Black bear hunting is allowed in WV. We have an over population of bears. WV use to have a very strick season with a limit of one bear for that season. Over the past two years the DNR has opened an early season and increased the limit to two bears in some counties.
A number of states allow it - Maine, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Utah, etc. See the link for more detailed information about tag lotteries and rule changes either just passed or in the works.
We have black bear hunting here in Minnesota. Most of the woods bears seem to be of moderate size, and the bears that live around town seem to get larger. (Eating garbage.)
you can in pa where i live but the season is over now its at the end of november statewide.

How can i teach my pointer to stop hunting?

Whenever i would walk her she would pull me with the leash and look for rabits and when she would see one she would ltry too pull me and run after it. (I do use training collar)How can i teach my pointer to stop hunting?
It's impossible to change the nature of a dog. Pointers are bred and used as HUNTING dogs. Therefore, they will most likely attempt to find and hunt small animals. How can i teach my pointer to stop hunting?
Dogs are put into groups because that is what they specialize in. If your dog is a working hunting dog, it has a very strong prey drive. What you must do is focus that drive into a very similar but non lethal approach. These type of dogs can easily turn their fascination to toys, like balls, frisbees, basically anything they can chase. When they catch the toy reward them as if you were a proud hunter and you dog just caught a great catch. That will redirect his drive, and still make him feel like he serves the pack well. He wants to feel like he serves his instinctual purpose, so let him, but redirect him.
why get a breed that is known for that sort of thing and then try and change its innate nature?
When you start your walk make sure she knows whats up. Don't let her get excited before leaving home. Put the leash on her and wait until she calms down. Open the door and make her sit and wait. When she is calm in the doorway walk forward. If her nose starts to drop check(a slight tug) the leash If she turns her head check the leash. This way she will realize there is a time for hunting and there is a time for walking. The first couple of time make it a 5min walk and always end on a positive note with her paying attention. Gradually she will be able to go on longer walks. You might even have to invest in a skate board or run with her to get that energy re-directed. Just above all be calm and she will too.
you have a very hard and long road ahead of you if you think you are going to be able to stop you pointer hunting. its in its nature bred through the generations. however you can try to make this better. use food rewards while out on walks if she/he is a food orientated dog to distract try making it sit while on a walk and dont continue to walk until the dog has stopped pulling. what type of training collar do you have? i find that harnesses are much better you can control the dog better withour harming it. goodluck
you really can't change a pointer from hunting

    yes

its a pain in the @$$ when people come in here and tell you what your doing is wrong when they have no idea what they are talking about

like something that happened yesterday with some PETA freak- they came in here asking all sorts of bull sh*t questions and i answered two, one saying that if they came to where i lived and started ';preaching'; like that that they'd get their butt whooped. they retaliated and asked a question asking if i have a 'man-package' which was out of line.. and they were very hypocrite too- men who hunted were girls and girls who hunted were men to them.. it was nice to see some people in here 'having my back' but we shouldn't have to defend ourselves like that.

its not like we go and harass all the vegans and vegetarians

i've also asked a few questions about deer hunting and i've had a few people answer and say that it's wrong and that its murder... its awful

i don't go pick a fight with the PETA freaks, but i will stand up for OUR right

    the group-- great idea!! :)

about the group- more info for me please? (:

i don't know much about the yahoo groups, this may be a crazy question, but are the groups free? and other things like that?Would people be interested in a ethical hunting group on yahoo?
I almost always give the benefit of doubt that ALL HUNTERS are ethical and as humane as possible. I have seen some posts where I wonder about it. There are certain standards of behaviors that hunters have to maintain, above and beyond the typical citizen;respect for property and the animal hunted, knowledge of the laws and use of your weapons above just going out and blasting away, understanding of the opposition we as hunters encounter, and teaching other people what being a hunter means.

I do get tired of the PETA and the Anti-hunters in here, but their augments never hold water and they can never prevail in an open debate about the benefits of hunting and the economic impact hunters have.

We all grew up with the notion of ';I'll protect my country and the rights of it's people. I'll defend your right to free speech even if I don't agree.'; and that has to hold true in these forums too. I'm teaching my sons how to hunt and to do it properly, heck you can even see a video we did on my profile. I'm very proud of my son and how I was taught to treat hunting is being passed onto him.
I hate it when I am told that what I do is wrong and cruel. It pisses me off!! I could care less what those people think, if they don't like hunting then they don't have to hunt or be around it but let me live my life and do what I like to do. I am true to the sport and will never stop hunting no matter what those people say so just give up!

It is refreshing to have someone else bring up this problem because I know that I can't be the only one that is pissed off by it!
I love Nancy D having hunting accidents. She already managed to shoot herself in the head and destroyed her short term memory center. You can tell because she keeps posting the same message over and over again, thinking she is being clever.

As for an ethical hunting section, no, not many people would be that interested. Most of the hunters that post are of the ethical variety anyway. And the PETA people that post aren't really interested in our answers in the first place. They want to come in, poke fun at us, call us names, and then go scampering back to the coffee house to show their friends how they have struck a mighty blow against the animal killing monsters. So what would be the point? We already get enough of the ';How can you murder cute, fluffy little animals you b@$tards?'; kinds of questions as it is. And having a specific section with the word ';ethical'; in it would only do two things. First, it would draw in the PETA nuts like moths to a flame, so we couldn't have meaningful postings without having to wade through tons of anti-hunting posts. And second, it would imply that other hunting forums were UNethical, which would only give the anti crowd more ammunition. Besides, letting them define what is or is not ethical is like having the proverbial two wolves and a sheep vote on what will be for dinner. Whatever the outcome, the sheep isn't going to like it. Giving the anti-hunting crowd a chance to define what is ethical in hunting will lead to anything other than sneaking up and taking pictures while you eat your tofu and rutabega sandwich being considered cruel and inhumane. I don't buy that, so I won't let them make those decisions about my sport.
Well Gib, I am sorry to report it to you, but you just gave them exactly what they troll for. Nancy and Angel McSpayed are here only to harass ethical people by their unethical tactics, and to get on our nerves. Luckily for them, hunters are generally kind and caring people who do not resort to such bending of the truth to make their points, nor do they make threats like eco terrorists like PETA, and other groups of their ilk. Sadly if we ignore them they won't go away either, and there is no reasoning with the unreasonable. I commend you for wanting a forum that makes more sense, and is more comfortable in which to communicate, but trolls will find us there too, so we must just persevere J.
Sometimes, like for example predator hunting. Some people berate people for asking questions about this because they do not eat the coyote or whatever. This is a hunting section.....should they ask it in the vegan section? No.. this is their forum as well as rabbit or deer hunters.

What does get a bad response from me and others is a dumb masked question from a vegan who has no reason to be here other than too harass. See above post. (Angel mc)

These tools ask why some people go to vegetarian or vegan sites and harass them ....well DUH... They only serve to widen the gap and promote intolerance of each other.
Go here and join up, this is to all who are interesting in hearing and discussing the truth about hunting. I am interested and am a member

    Yes.
I find hunting repugnant so I steer clear of this section, but your term ';ethical hunting'; peaked my interest. My first thought was ';non-sequitor'; but I can see how it could be possible if necessary to survive; but not in THIS (U.S.) society.

What were the Stone Age methods of hunting?

Did early humans use stones to throw at animals? Or use spears of wood? Please help. I also want to know how to spearfish (fish with a wooden spear). What were the Stone Age methods of hunting?
In the case of hunting smaller game like rabbits and birds yes early humans would have used primitive slings to throw stones. In the case of deer and larger animals, yes they probably would have used spears that could be thrown with and Atlatle (spelling?). These would have been lighter throwing javelins. Later Stone Age hunters probably would have had bows as well. I would suggest looking into the hunting methods of modern day ';primitive'; tribes like those in Africa or South America. I know you would find info on how to spearfish the old fashion way. It is something I am looking into myself. Also if you google survival websites you would probably find a survival website showing you how to make these tools and use them.

Which type of pellet is good for hunting medium size game?

What do you use, i was thinking about hollow point.Which type of pellet is good for hunting medium size game?
Rabbits are typically hunted with a shotgun, shotgun ammo comes in various pellet sizes, not hollow points, hollow points are ONLY found on bullets.

But to answer your question a #4-5 shot should be fine, much larger than that an you'll have trouble finding the bunny (at least in pieces large enough to be called meat ;o) )Which type of pellet is good for hunting medium size game?
You'll probably want either a domed or pointed pellet for maximum penetration on animals like rabbits. For squirrels either domed or hollow points should work OK. However be aware that air-gun hollow-point pellets don't perform as explosively as their rim-fire cousins. If you want total energy transfer you might want to look at something like wadcutters. If you opt for hollow points, check the linked article since it deals specifically with air-gun hollow points.

Regardless, of the pellet you choose, you wont be using it on medium sized game unless you're using something like the Quakenbush .458 air-gun. Most high-power airguns are strictly small game and small varmint propositions.
If you are planning to eat them, a .22 or .177 is best, but hollow points cause a lot of meat damage. A 20 gauge shotgun with a small shot size, steel of course, will work too, but make sure you remove all of the shot that is left in the animal. If they are a nuisance, a .30-06 or .308 will get rid of them ; )
For rabbit size animals either .177 or .22 would be enough. A .177 will be faster than .22 but the .22 has more mass. The main question should be, how fast is your gun capable of firing a pellet.
I have no idea where you plan on hunting, but in FLORIDA, it is illegal to use a pellet gun, for hunting any type of game animals
which ever pellet your gun shoots best! accuracy is everything! rws super domes, crossman premiers and jsb exacts shoot best in most my guns.
    what gun are you shooting

Is hunting and fishing considered a sport?

My friend and I have had this heated debate whether hunting and fishing are sports, he says for something to be considered a sport it has to aquire athleticism, and he says if you cant say i play______ then its not a sport such as i play baseball. Is hunting and fishing considered a sport?
';Sport'; and ';Athletic'; are words with different meanings.

I suggest you and your buddy sit down with an English dictionary and do a bit of learning. Is hunting and fishing considered a sport?
sometimes you play (__with yourself__). Would it at that poing be considered a sport?

If that is the case then you definitely have to remove golf from the list of ';sports';. No atleticism there.

You ever been fishing in a high wind or wave condition? Have your ';buddy'; try that out as a physical activity.

Have you ever stalked a bear through a dense bush? Ever been chase by a really pissssed boar hog? No?

If so, then you have the right to call it a sport.
    yes
Forget golf, just watch ESPN and you'll see that poker, of all freakin' things, is a sport. If that's a sport, then hunting %26amp; fishing are most definitely sports.

Running a marathon requires athleticism, nobody says ';I play running';, or at least I hope not. Your friend's an idiot!
Dictionary I have defines SPORT as outdoor recreation as shooting*...Yes I believe it is a sport*...Look up the definition of SPORTSMAN*...
Coolhand, I never really thought about playing that game as a sport, but you just opened a new discussion for me and the wife. All these years she thought I was just wasting my time.

Oh, hunting and fishing is a sport. Ever wondered why we have ';sporting goods'; stores?
Try dragging a 200 pound deer a half mile back to camp and say it doesnt require some athletic ability. At least you have to be in some half way decent shape to do that much less sit still for very long periods of time and be in cold, wet, hot temps.
If Golf is a sport, anything's a sport.

    Yes, they are.
    I vote for sport!
have your ignorant friend try elk hunting and see if he can keep up, then ask your question again..lol.
I go fishing in remote mountain areas and you better be athletic, otherwise you ain't gonna make it.
    yep it is a sport ';sporting rifle';
More hunters are killed or wounded each year while we practice our sport then in the NFL, NBA and NHL combined.

    Yes its a sport.

    Miketyson26
Hunting and fishing are real sports; you can argue that football, for instance, is not a sport but merely a game. Try quoting Hemingway on the subject.
    yes it is
hunting is a sport. fishing is a sport. if on sport center they put the world series of poker, than hunting and fishing is definitely a sport. you have to hike through dense brush, over long, seemingly endless fields, and through mountains. you have to have a good back to stand in a stand and good legs to be able to walk all day. it is physically demanding, more so than even the 2007 U.S. open or any golf. the same for fishing, but less demanding. people say that its a hobby, because its something done for recreation. but technically the same can be said about every other sport, really, just not professionally.

i am an avid outdoors man and hunting/fishing are definitely sports.
I hope that killing living beings will never be considered a sport.

Im a teen living in aus and i want to get in to bow hunting?

should i go join an archery club or somthing, do i need to buy a bow?Im a teen living in aus and i want to get in to bow hunting?
You need to go to a SSAA (Sporting Shooters Assosciation of Australia) branch or hunting club. They will sit you down and give you a test which will tell you how to make clean kills and so on. After you pass the test you get a licence. You would need to buy your own bow or if others are also hunting with you. You can borrow theirs. Some clubs might have bows available.Im a teen living in aus and i want to get in to bow hunting?
    Your Answer:

You should do some research on Bows. This sport can be very expensive, but extremely fun! Mathews Bows are top quality but I would not buy one of this caliber just yet. Mathews cost between $700 to $1500 fully outfitted. I would find an experienced bow hunter (maybe a friend)? to show you the ropes. Siting in the bow and how to shoot it properly. Buy some videos or books on bow and deer hunting.

    Hope this helps.

I will do a little more research for you and follow up later.
A club is a great idea. Most have an open shoot where non-members can shoot (for a small fee). Usually you need to bring your own bow, but you may find rentals. And congrats! Bowhunting is a truly honorable sport.
i guess you really should buy a bow if you are gonna take this seriously and maybe just practice a bit before joining a club they tend to be more of a social thing.

  • What gun should I get for deer hunting in Pennsylvania?

I have a 243 but i was wondering if it would be sufiicient enough for whitetail deerWhat gun should I get for deer hunting in Pennsylvania?
    * Yes, it is a Great Deer Rifle, and can also be used to Hunt Black Bear, Antelope, and Mule Deer.* Use the 100 grain bullet for Deer, or Black Bear.* You have Eleven (11)* different Grain bullets to choose from with the 243 Winchester for Target Shooting, Big Game Hunting or Varmint Hunting.*What gun should I get for deer hunting in Pennsylvania?
The 243 is adequate for deer hunting, but you need to use a good quality, preferably a bonded core, bullet in 90-105 grain. 243 has enough velocity to have a standard cup and core bullet separate on impact, and have a history of that. Because the mass and frontal area of a 243 bullet is pretty small you need to be particular about shot placement, more so than with a 270,7mm-08,30 caliber. That 90-105 grains doesn't provide a lot of penetration on quartering shots.

I have a 243 for my son's current deer rifle (he's 12), but after seeing the numbers on the 7mm-08 I would choose that over a 243 for deer in a short action rifle. A 25-06 and up would be my recommendation, but the 243 will do with good bullet selection and shot placement. The 243 has plenty of velocity and energy, it just has to be used properly.
A 243win will take deer sized game but I don't find it to be a good brush gun. Most shots in Pa are under 100 yards .Pa is full of woodlands, pine trees.and heave bush.If you already have a 243 use it but if you are buying a rifle I prefer at least a 7mm or larger. My favorit Pa deer hunting calibers are ,30-30,35rem,444marlin,45-70,marlin450,3鈥?the 30-06 .
The .243 CAN be a sufficient rifle to take a deer with. If you load your own ammunition, I would suggest loading with premium bullets. The .243 gets a bad rap for poor round construction and at times can blow apart. For a beginner, I would recommend the .308 (.243 is a smaller version). .308 is an excellent rifle for deer and other large game. If you decide to stick with the .243, opt for 100 grain loads. If you hit a bone with a wimpy 85 grain, it will most likely disintegrate.
First look that the management area you plan on hunting in. For example you can only use shotgun in parts of 2B, make sure you can use a rifle. It also depends on the terrain of the property you are hunting on. For where I hunt at, I prefer to use a .308 or .30-06 mainly due to the amount of underbrush in some areas and the potential for longer distance shots. To each is own though....
the .243 will do you fine. hunting here you shouldn't have to worry about long range shots. my recommendation would be to use a 105 gr. BT SP for best performance.

    good luck now.
the 243 has killed thousands of deer nationwide, of course you have enough gun, I'm sure you already know that shot placement is critical, you can have a 300 winmag and not kill a deer if you hit it wrong.
You have all you need. Just make sure your using the right grain bullet and that you have the rifle zero'd good. Many deer have been taken with a 243. You need nothing else.
Just plain yes 100 gr sn. Jesse from Lost CreeK #2 Pa. P.s. sk no you have the right rifle
    .308
You should definately get a more quick firing gun like a AK-47. If you want a more powerful gun I would go with a shotgun. A 243 would also be good.

How do you feel about Native people hunting whales?

Please keep comments from all sides respectful of others. How do you feel about Native people hunting whales?
Considering that its typically one whale every 8-10 years, and just about every single part of the whale gets used (and the left overs ar used as crab bait) then I honestly think thats perfectly fine. Its not like we are killing one a week like they do in Norway or Japan. If people really want to have a fit about that, then have them ram their boats into those hunting ships, not canoes full of children just going to visit their cousins. I rarely tell this story, because we are taught that when something like this happens to people or a person, the more the story is told the less power it contains, but oddly enough I was thinking about it right before I signed on, and then this question popped up. So, take whatever meaning you get out of it...Does anybody remember the big stink Whale Activists made about ten years ago when the Makkah tribe decided to start whale hunting again? The summer after that first whale hunt, the makkah invited all Canoe Families (its a tribal term, hard to explain) to join them in Neah Bay for a Potlatch (tribal gathering). Anyways, for these types of gatherings, most people travel by canoe for spiritual/cultural reasons. I was 12 years old and finally passed the cold water training/endurance tests to be allowed to paddle on the open water with other members of my tribe. My brother, and two of my other cousins my age were in the canoe with three adults. Six other canoes of adult/children were traveling with us. Once we got near Neah bay, protesters or racists (im not sure which) suddenly blocked our way into the inlet where the Makkah tribe lives, and actually began forcing us to pull near the kelp beds where we could get tangled, and if swamped, most likely would drown. They were screaming really aweful stuff, one guy even peed on one of the other canoes. We just kept on singing our paddle songs and ignoring them, but then one of them started ramming their boat into the one I was in. Our captain started shouting ';You idiot! We have CHILDREN in here! We arent here to hunt!'; but it didn't stop. My cousin in another canoe started to sing a power song, which we all caught on and sang after our captians sang along. Less than five minutes later, three whales swam in from the open ocean and forced a gap between us and the protestors. Another two, icluding a baby, slowly urged us away from the kelp beds. I admit that I was terrified, if you have ever been that close up to any whale in such a small vessle, you'd understand. Anyways, they stayed with us all the way to makkah, and waited at the entrance to the harbor until all the canoes were safely in. The people on the beach waiting for us sang a prayer song of thanks and two came in and waited until the song was over then swam back out. The protestors didn't show up the next day when the rest of the canoes arrived. How do you feel about Native people hunting whales?
Do you know that there were flocks of passenger pigeons so huge their flight would darken the sky for several minutes when the country was ours? They are now extinct from over hunting and sport killing by white Americans. Do you know that the buffalo herd in America was estimated at 100 million strong when we owned the country? By 1890. white Americans had killed all but 300 animals. Tule elk were abundant in Calif. The Calif. Grizzly bear was still existing, and there were many thousands of whales of all species feeding those people way up north. Native people have not been the problem with the disappearance of other species. Let those people eat in peace. EDIT:

Salish Lady, that was among the best stories I ever heard!. I hope you are still sharing that with people when you have come to 100 yrs of life.
salishlady tells a powerful story and Roman's facts are evident enough. Our government has a distorted sense of balance. We ';protect'; the mustang population to the point where they have gotten so large they have over grazed the range lands, are staving to death, and the US taxpayer is paying millions of dollars to buy feed for all the unwanted, unadoptable mustangs. . The state of Utah issues over 10 thousand deer permits and idiot hunters still shoot cows and horses. Commercial fishing companies are depleting the natural ocean resources at alarming rates but they continue. But people protest a native tribe their cultural traditions and sacred customs? A gross distortion of misguided priorities.

In case you missed my point, yes, I believe native peoples should be allowed to hunt in their traditional ways.
That is the native Alaskans food, so it's okay.

What's not okay is the killing of seals, whales, rhinos, elephants, etc ...for asian medicines and aphrodisiacs.

As Roman has said...............I despise hunters for sport.
i want to echo what Roman has said. and to Salish lady..n'yo. the words are still powerful. maybe some will understand the creatures of this land are OUR relatives. niew:wen for sharing.
As long as they don't over do it and do it in the name if tradition or survival then I am OK with it.
    Save the whales! %26gt;:D

    ...

    Although, they would need food...
I couldn't have put it any better Roman.

    thumbs up
