Your Mossberg 590 Mariner*Cylinder Bore shotgun will do a fine job, for perimeter protection as you described. You can purchase a half/ scabbard that will mount on front of your 4 wheeler and give you direct access to your shotgun. Since your Mossberg has an extended magazine I would suggest a mixture of #00 Buckshot (9-32 caliber pellets per round), and Rifled Slugs or Sabot Slugs every other round. This is an unbeatable combination for two legged targets or the four legged type, as well as vehicle engine blocks etc.,should the need arise. No need to buy a rifle (Unless you want one anyway!) Don't waste your money of sabot slugs in that shotgun. They won't do you any better then the rifled slugs (maybe worse).
Use a rifle for anything past 100 yards.

If you are hunting, check laws of barrel length and magazine capacity.
Unless you have huge bears or mountain lions, I wouldn't worry about getting the rifle. Your Mossberg would do fine, just use a slug barrel if you're going to use slugs.
Your shotgun with a good hunting saboted slug will do the job as good as a 21'; deer barreled shotgun. 1 ounce of speeding lead/copper does tremendous damage to flesh.
But if you're looking for a hunting set up, adding a rifle to your battery of weapons is a good idea as well. A good 30-06 or 308 will do just about anything you ask of it with game under 200lbs. The 3006 will also do a little more.
Well, if you are not going to be shooting anything larger than coyotes, this shotgun will do just fine. Just get some Federal Hevi-Shot, or Winchester Extended Range coyote loads. Good luck.
