Whats the difference between hunting seals and hunting deer?

Most people seem to protest against seal hunting - why? I'm a vegetarian so I am against it but I can't think of any logical reason why its worse than deer or cow killing.Whats the difference between hunting seals and hunting deer?
Deer taste better.Whats the difference between hunting seals and hunting deer?
I would just like to start by saying the harp seal population in Atlantic Canada isn't suffering they're thriving. There are over 5 million harp seals ( just one of the species hunted) off the coast of Newfoundland. These animals have been commercially hunted for over a hundred years and they are thriving. The population is in no way small or at risk of being wiped out.

As for the question, you're right there really is no difference between the hunting of deer and seals. Except maybe Canadian Seal hunting has tight regulations and seals have better PR people than Deer or Moose.

both animals are hunted under tight regulation and license laws. In fact the vast majority of seals are shot not killed with a hakipik despite what the images may suggest.

Seals and deer are hunted for population control and products. People eat both Deer meat and Seal meat.

Seals are also used for their pelts, oil, and possibly soon their heart valves for human transplant in addition to the meat.

When hunters follow the guidelines and regulations both seals and deer are humanly hunted.

The reason there is so much of a fuss about seals is really simple. They make more money. Seals are cute and who cares if baby seals are not legally hunted if you can put enough pictures out and convince the public that they are you're going to be rolling in money. No one wants a cute animal to die. That's why the Wolffish is so endangered no one can love it's slimy, toothy face so it is doomed like all the other less marketable creatures.

Sealing isn't worse than any other form of animal slaughter or hunting. The only difference is most slaughter houses are not outside on clean white snow. seal hunting doesn't happen behind closed doors, and some people ( I'm talking about those who eat meat here) are uncomfortable with the fact that when an animal dies it bleeds. I guess people think all their meat is starts off wrapped in plastic in the supermarket.
There are less seal in the world already, because of the number of natural predators they have, water pollution/climate and human hunting. It is looked down upon to hunt an animal ALREADY struggling to survive. Deer are certainly not becoming extinct, ( at the rate they are being hunted however, they could be in the not so distant future) so hunting them is considered a bane activity. All hunting in my opinion is wrong. Humans are doing ENOUGH to kill animal life without the authorizing of shooting them with guns for fun.
Well, for one thing, deer hunting is used to keep the deer population in check. For the most part, in the U.S., deer have no natural predators left. We have wiped most of them out. The deer will breed and their numbers will increase and soon there are too many deer. More than their food sources will allow. They eat all the food and start to starve. Disease will also kick in and you have many deer dying. Hunting deer in a controlled fashion (that is regulated by law controlled by professionals who determine the number of deer to remove) will keep this from happening. Also, deer are nuisance animals. Keeping their numbers in check helps farmers keep their crops, helps drivers have a better chance of not hitting a deer, and helps cities keep the critters out of the back yards in suburbia. Deer are not going extinct. They are not endangered. They are not even under pressure of their numbers dropping. This is after decades of controlled hunting. If you want to see deer then find your way to the country. It does not take much work to see them especially at dawn or dusk.

As for the bovines, they are raised with the specific purpose of being used for meat and leather. They are not wild animals who are in danger of over breeding or are causing a nuisance. However, they are bred to feed people and be used for leather. They have significant economic qualities. Cows keep many people employed and many people fed. That is a big difference.

The seals are different because they are not in danger of over populating. They are not nuisance animals. The economic quality of the animals is much smaller than that of beef and the money they bring in is for non-vital reasons. They are not killed for the food they might bring in.
Well, let's see... some of these seem legit to me, others are less so.

- Seals are cute. Deer are less cute.

- Deer are generally shot (and killed instantly). Seals can be clubbed, speared, and otherwise killed less-than-instantly.

- Deer are usually killed for food. Seals? Some folks eat 'em, but generally, they're killed for their pelts.

- Seals don't really interfere with people, but deer sometimes eat stuff they aren't supposed to (and upset farmers by doing so).
well where I live, deer-hunting is very common. my uncle and his son have hunted deer all my life. venison is pretty good. but would I ever kill a deer? No I can't bring myself to do that. Without deer-hunting the population would go out-of-control.

seals have more enemies than just humans. orcas hunt seals too.
Seals are rarer, deers are actually over populating the area's they live in, that's why we have hunting season, If we didn't hunt them the deer would run out their food supplies and end up dead anyway, except waaaay more painfully and more widely spread.
deer tend to overpopulate, because their natural predators have low numbers, so hunting them is actually encouraged in some places.

Seals have a much smaller population, and have more natural predators.
There's no difference. I think we are hearing about people protesting seals more now because of all the news about seal clubbing. But fundamentally, there's no difference at all.
No difference really apart from location, excuse and weapons. Still a life gone at the end of the day, still an un-needed act.
Seals have more predators than dear: Aka whales, sharks, parasites... Deer just have us and wolves, which are almost extinct anyways.
baby seals are beaten to death while deer are shot. It is a big difference.
I don't find much of a diff.
