start out with small game. find a place with squirrels or rabbits. get a 100 dollar pellet gun with 1000 fps. where I live you can get a 5 dollar license to try hunting. check your fish and game to see what they have as far as license.Im a newb to hunting what equipment is good for starting off?
What state will you be hunting? If it is the midwest or south I say get a 22. You can shoot squirrel and rabbit and the gun will be cheap as well as the ammo. You will have a long season and many opportunities.

The most important thing in any hunting is scouting. The easiest way is to find someone who hunts and tag along. If that is not possible try a bunch of spots and expect to be frustrated for a little while.

Almost all game can be shot EARLY in the morning.

Do go to a hunting safety class and follow everything you learn. If you don't want to bother please don't go hunting in AZ GA CO or MO. I don't want to be in the same woods.

You will get better with time. Good luck when you shoot first whatever it will be so exciting and you will want to tell everyone. I wish I was there to see it.
You choose the animal and we can tell you how to hunt. If you want to do group hunting with a lot of shooting.... try bird hunting (it's a lot of fun). Get a nice 12 gauge that doesn't jam, they'll help you with the bullets. If you enjoy getting up early and walking through the forest to a tree stand where you wait to finally put the target on a nice deer... then you'll need a rifle (I use a 7mm 08 and have dropped all my deer, also like 30 06's and 270s. I mainly hunt deer and dove. Dove is something that you can step right into (with a group). The only practice you need is to shoot at some clay birds and get your aiming down. Hunting deer takes a lot more patience and skill (especially if your looking for a buck). You have to learn the land and understand the animal a little bit more with deer, but it just depends on what type of hunting you want to do.
whatever you do, DO NOT. try to hunt with a supid pellet gun.

they do NOT have enough kinetic energy to transfer a lethal blow to what ever you are aiming at. at 50yards that 2oz pellet will be little less than a spitball in the wind.

shoot to kill on the first shot, not the fith shot because it is not humane to make an animal suffer/torture it before it dies.

make the first shot count, which is easy if you have at bare minimum, a .22 cal rifle/handgun.
Well it depends on what game you wanna hunt. And what gun you ll need to be able to kill the animal with minimal pain There are all sorts of game to hunt from squirrels to bucks, and turkey. personally if your starting out get yourself a .410 shotgun single shot or pump and do some bird or squirrel hunting. but if your a little older such as 14 or older try and get you a 12 ga pump shotgun and do some deer hunting which i love. theres an abundance of them. Try going out with friends or relatives and hunt with them and see which game you like hunting. then find a gun that suits your needs and you can handle and go from there.

Get a remington or a mossberg if you get a shotgun. if you want something you can hunt alot of game with get either a 20 gauge or a 12 gauge pump. as far as ammo it depends on your game and your barrel and gun gauge. i have a mossberg 500 pump 12 gauge and i use winchester 1.0z 2-3/4'; inch sabot slugs %26lt;---(none rifled slug) since my barrel is rifled to hunt deer with. If you hunt rabbit or squirrel shoot it with a small game load. take a hunter coarse and you will learn and will be surprised at how many of your questions will be answered

find that youtube vid on how to field dress a rabbit (now you'll know how to clean and eat game animals)

I'd recommend starting off with a .22LR rifle like a marlin 925 or similar.

walmart sells really cheap .22LR ammo. 550rd Federal bulk pack ammo only $13.

learn how to shoot first safely and accurately before attempting to hunt for small game. ask the local game regulations department on specific hunting laws.
Dove hunting is a great place to start. Its fun and pretty inexpensive. You will have to take a hunter safety coarse. Fairly easy and takes one day. Then your going to want a good gun because your going to have fun and be hooked. I suggest a benelli or a browning 12 gauge. But if your not sure about it go with a mosberg. A benelli will cost about 500 to 2500 dollars. A browning will cost from 600 to 2500 dollars. A mosberg will cost about 250 to 500 dollars. All are good guns. Go with a pump to start off with. Shells will cost about 5 dollars a box. Use eight shot two and three quarter inch shells. The license (in california) will cost you about 47dollars with the upland game bird stamp. A hat, and a bucket to sit on. SO depending on the gun it could range from 400 dollars to 2600 dollars. But it is worth every penny
Take a hunting safety course. The type of equipment you get will depend upon where you live and which type of game you want to hunt. For example, if you live in Illinois or Ohio and want to hunt deer, you'll need to use a shotgun. Contact your state's wildlife management agency, whatever they may be called, for details. Or, ask at local gun stores.

start out with target practice and get familiar with your gun

varmints are alot of fun to shoot at

.223 and up from there depending on what you want to hunt

don't buy the cheapest rifle/scope you can find, it is an investment buy what you can afford
Pick up a .22LR and hunt small game like squirrels and rabbits (as long as it's legal to do so in your state). This will teach you control and aiming. For deer and larger game, you'll need a larger caliber rifle or shotgun. I suggest going with a bolt action in .308 caliber. You can use that on any big game in the U.S.,it has less recoil than a .30-06 and will shoot flat out past 300 yards. Ammo is easy to find as well.

You could also get into muzzleloading or archery.
It depends what you are hunting. Please take some gun and hunter safety courses that will show you the basics.

For about 500.00 you can buy a gun and some ammo. Remington 700 rifles are nice and Remington 870 pump shotguns are a nice pics.
