What is the best dog for hunting?

Would a Whippet be better or a Beagle in hunting rabbits and why?

What about Greyhounds and Dachshunds? What is the best dog for hunting?
Oh wow.. someone suggested large dogs for something that they couldn't and weren't bred to do.

Beagles were bred for rabbit hunting.

Whippets were bred for hare hunting- they are the long distance runners of the dog world, along with Greyhounds. (both- Whippets and Greyhounds originated in the deserts along with Ibizans and Sulkies- their eyes are set to the front of their skull more so because they are sight hounds)

Dachshunds were bred to be tunnel dogs- to go after rats, etc. What is the best dog for hunting?
sorry for the stupidity of the first two answers. this isn't my area of expertise but I guarantee one of the more experienced members of the hunting community will help you out. my personal opinion it depends I believe with the proper training any dog can perform any task as long as you train him right. for example I have a border collie/german shepard mix she's an ex junk yard dog but I trained her good and she obeys all the basic commands and is a trained gun dog and I hunt rabbit and squirrels with her. as for a rabbit hunting dog beagles are a tracking dog and I think they were bred for tracking rabiit and other smaller animals and for hunting fox so they should be a great rabbit dog. whippets I had to look up they seem to be a cousin of the gray hound and were bred for sight hunting so they wouldn't be a good choice for rabbit hunting. considering rabbits like brush and a good nose can come in handy. so that eliminates grey hound also. as for a dachshund it was bred to smell, chase and flush out smaller animals so that should make it a good choice for rabbit hunting too. so in conclusion your best bet would be either the beagle or dachshund.
This might sound sarcastic but it's true: I have hunted squirrels AND rabbits using my pit bulls. Of course, this is not what they were bred for, BUT, they are bred for intelligence and desire to please. They have a great prey drive, and, imho, they actually understand that this is fun... Just be careful not to shoot your dog(s).. it happens more than you might think....
I have hunted with beagles and they are an excellent rabbit hunting dog they do all the work all you have to do is stand there where ever the dog first flushed the rabbit and it will come right back to that same spot within shooting distance sorry no knowledge of the other breeds you asked about.
For Rabbits its very hard to beat a Beagle.* I have three (3*) of them.*
The beagle is bred for rabbit hunting.
Beagle would be best for rabbits. That's what it's bred to do.
