What brand of bolt action rifle is the best for hunting and what is the best for military?

Hunting large game like, deer, elk, buffalo, bear. Sako? watherby? Remington? Browning? Winchester? Ruger? Kimber? ect......What brand of bolt action rifle is the best for hunting and what is the best for military?
You dident list anything that wont work just your choice on slight difereces in function, looks (admit it guys it matters) fit, weight and any other criteria you chose oh, also pocket book. caliber is your choice in any of them. just pick a caliber that will ethicaly kill what you are hunting. militay the m24 (m700 rem) is an exelent gp rifle for snipers. in my day we carried m21 (accurised m14) it was not quite as accuate as the m24 but has its stringths. no mater what one guy chooses some other guy says his is better and can prove it with facts. but what matters most is the shooter. the snipers of ww11 used rifles that would hardly be considerd ';snipers rifles'; today but noone can say they werent effective. there is no such thing as a sniper rifle, there are snipers and the equipment they use. What brand of bolt action rifle is the best for hunting and what is the best for military?
Best is a matter of opinion, pure and simple. Your list includes good quality makers. The caliber is more important, you need a big heavy bullet to stop a buffalo or grizzly but a much more tame one for deer. For example, a .243 is OK for deer, but never a huge buffalo or grizzly. The .45-70 is way overkill for a whitetail deer, but was popular for buffalo and bear.

As for military, the intended purpose is needed. Infantry? Patrol? Sniper? Entry team? all have specific needs.
The Remington Model 700 is used by both hunters and snipers in the military. It is the most common setup for military snipers but might not be the best one, even though it does a damn fine job! Winchester model 70's were used as well during vietnam but not anymore.

If I had to pick the ';Best'; one, I would go with a Sako. It is expensive but very nice. There are Sako hunting rifles and Sako sniper rifles like the TRG. As far as taking game, these rifles come in many different calibers for there specific task.

personal preference, of course...
The Remington model 700 is a popular bolt-gun amongst hunters. It is also used as the platform by which the US Military builds their sniper rifles (model 700 actions with custom barrels and stocks). Also, the alphabet soup of US Federal agencies also use the Rem 700 for their precision sniper work.

The Ruger M77 is another great bolt action rifle. For the money, Ruger always delivers value in their firearms.

Honorable mention goes to the Winchester Model 70. It's a very good rifle, but has undergone many changes over the years...and I do not believe that Winchester is presently making any of these rifles in the USA at the moment. That will probably change in time, but for now, Winchester as a company is in a state of flux.
The preference on the gun qualities is your choice. As everyone will have his/her personal favorites. I own one of each in Rem, Weatherby and 3 in Ruger. But they each have a special purpose for why I have em. For the guy saying the bolt action has limited uses in the military, I differ from that thought. If you seen our guys fighting in Afgan at the ranges I've seen you would see that the M4 does not do the job. We are still plagued by jams, bolt faliures and clip feeding. It's great close up quarters with the shorter ranges and the ACOG and AIM POINT scopes. But the caliber just isn't enough for long range shooting with FMJ bullets that pass right through em with very minor damage, unless hit in a very vital spot. I think/know that our guys would do a better job in 2 man teams with a bolt 308 back-up. That means take a platoon of 64 guys and every 2 get a 308 with a X amount of scope and you would defenitly see the change of the way the enemy fights at any given distance. They defenitly would think twice about where they poked their heads up at. We have some very capable guys that shoot extremely well and all the time in the world to train on them.Even mounting the scopes to 249's and 240's would improve our capabilities at longer ranges.
No absolute answer. Kind of like asking, ';What is the best car for driving?'; Depends what kind of driving (hunting) you are doing I guess. I also like the Ruger M77 for deer hunting and other common midsized game. Why? Good price to value ratio, fits me well, classic looks. I use a 30/06. Why? Easy to find, relatively cheap, versatile. I also have ammo commonality with some of my old military arms. Bolt action rifles have a very limited niche in the modern military. I prefer an airstrike. :)
the remington 700 is a bolt action currently used by military snipers and is a standard to the military when it comes sniper rifles my uncle had one custom made wich was at the same level to almost even better than the military ones and was about 3k for the gun it was in 308 and was built for killing people but he used it as a deer gun wich is not a prob but for big game i suggest the 300 win mag in remington 700 model custom or factory made

ive held and operated the action of the remy 700 and can see why its such a good gun the materials are tough and smooth and very operable compared to a few other bolt actions wich are not as tough when it comes to material
the best bolt actions for hunting are.....

NEW

-remington r700

-barret model 95 or 98b

Not so new

-Mosin nagant m38, m39, or 91-30. my favorites.\

these are not in any order, just what I thought of first. and this is just my opinion, no facts involved. best is always opinion. my brother will tell you mauser 98, my best friend will tell you accuracy international l96(arctic warfare). all opinion.
There's nor real definitive answer for that question, but Rem 700, a Savage 110, or a Browning A or X bolt will all be excellent answers.

(BTW, what moron goes hunting with a .338 Lapua Mag (Barrett 98B), or a .50 BMG (Barret 95)?

Those are tactical rifles with near zero application for any serious hunter.
I'm real partial to Ruger for a hunting rifle. Military members must remember that their weapon was manufactured by the lowest bidder :) Actually, military sniper systems are damned expensive. I believe there is a website, sniper.com, that you can view. Back to hunting, more costly does not always mean a better product.
any bolt action has two major considerations....positive extraction of spent shells... and controlled, non -binding feed of new cartridges from the magazine.

Just about every modern bolt action rifle we have today borrows heavily from the Mauser design.

This can be a ';ford vs chevy'; question... if we are looking among the same grade of gun ...selection will be more of a personal preference.
It all comes down to money.

I would like a Blaser R93 however I can only afford a Remington 700.

The military is a bottomless pit of cash however they put the contracts out to tender and the troops on the ground don't always get the best deal.
I'm a remington 700 fan, but the scope is as important as the rifle. It's all about bullet placement.
